For the second year running, Tottenham are honored to have one of their players included on Tuttosport’s Golden Boy shortlist.

The Italian sports journal releases a list of exciting young players from around Europe every year after consulting with other newspapers from around Europe. Last year Tottenham’s own wunderkind, Dele Alli, was included amongst the names.

This year, though, it’s a bit more of a shocker. Kyle Walker-Peters is included on a list that also features Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappé, Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé and AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Tuttosport’s reasoning here is plain to see. Walker-Peters laid a marker early in his career this summer with his win in the Under-20 World Cup — England’s first such honor at any level of football since 1966. That he followed that up with a man of the match debut for Spurs against Newcastle on the opening day of the season only compounded the impression that Walker-Peters has the potential to be something special.

The 20-year-old will continue to grow and could one day become a leading right-back in the Premier League, hopefully at Tottenham. He might be the least experienced of any name on the Golden Boy list, but his future still looks very bright.

Any hope that Walker-Peters would continue to build on the last few months effectively evaporated with the signing of Serge Aurier on the final day of the summer transfer window however. The Ivorian will be the presumptive starter going forward, much as Kyle Walker once was, while Kieran Trippier will return to backup duties.

Which means that Walker-Peters will be isolated to starts in domestic cup matches like the one Tottenham will play in on Tuesday evening. Perhaps he can stand out enough in those brief cameos to dislodge Trippier from the backup role, but that seems like something that is more likely to happen next season rather than anytime soon.

None of which should detract from the honor of being included with some of Europe’s best young talent. Walker-Peters should be patient with Maurcio Pochettino, who always finds a way for his best young players to earn time on the pitch — be it at Tottenham or elsewhere.
