Tottenham clearance sale continues with departures of Clinton Njie and Federico Fazio
By Ryan Wrenn
The story of the last week continues to be Tottenham’s sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, but the club completed two other deals this weekend that will further pad their coffers.
Though neither deal came close to approaching the £50 million initial fee received for Walker, Tottenham still recouped some money from the sales of Clinton Njie and Federico Fazio.
The deals shocked precisely no one. Both players were out on loan last season, to Olympique de Marseille and Roma respectively, and were not expected to don lilywhite again.
The pair join Nabil Bentaleb in the small club of Spurs players deemed outside of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans last summer. With the Argentine coach much preferring to keep talent close to home, the loan moves telegraphed an intention to sell well before an pens were put to paper.
Bentaleb, too, was sold to Schalke in a deal agreed to before the 2016/17 season was even out. The Algerian impressed mightily at the Bundesliga club and was rumored to be sold for upwards of £16 million.
Such sums were never expected for Njie or Fazio, neither of whom impressed much at Tottenham before their transfers. If rumors are to be believed, the two players earned Spurs approximately £10 million total.
Those are fair fees given both players’ records. Njie shined in spurts for Marseille but spent most of the season on the bench. Fazio, in contrast, muscled his way into the regular starting XI for Roma and performed well. His age — he’ll be 31 before the end of next season — undercuts his value considerably however.
That modest haul, like Walker’s fee, will be reinvesting into the club’s transfer kitty as Spurs get a belated start on reinforcing the squad ahead of the 2017/18 season. Already it seems Pochettino has his shopping list ready, with rumors again surfacing that the club it after Everton’s Ross Barkley.

Barring any shock moves, though, these are likely to be the only exits from the club this summer. Rumors that Eric Dier might be sold to Manchester United might persist, but the accumulated funds from the sales listed here should go some way to plugging any holes Pochettino might feel exist in his squad.
