Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke to the team’s official website and offered his thoughts on how he thinks Spurs will do against Watford.

As ever, Mauricio Pochettino is buoyant about his side’s chances to claim maximum points against a depleted Watford squad at Vicarage Road.

Speaking with Spurs TV on Tottenham’s official website, the Argentine manager said that his team’s objective is to continue their hot form and winning streak into the month of January.

With Chelsea winning yet again, and extending their 10-point gap to 13 points now, Spurs could reduce that amount back to 10 with a win tomorrow and go from there on January 4th when the two London sides reconvene for their reverse fixture.

“That is always our objective,” Pochettino explained.

“How we finished the year was very good. We broke the record for a [calendar] year with 71 points in 2016, that is important for us and to start the year with a good performance and hopefully with a victory would be fantastic too.”

The 71 points that Spurs have accrued this past year is a topic that Mauricio Pochettino talks with pride. As it shows that Tottenham had a very good 12 months, winning 20 times and picking up 11 draws to go along with six losses.

At the end of the day it doesn’t necessarily mean much, winning 71 points from January to December as it encompasses half a season from the 2015-16 campaign and this year’s 2016-17 term, but it drives the point home that Spurs continue to improve under Pochettino’s guidance.

“Maybe I repeat the same thing but it’s always difficult to play in the Premier League and we expect another tough game.” the 44-year-old manager said.

“It’s like a London derby again and Watford are strong, powerful and they have a clear idea of how they want to play.”

“I think we feel strong and we want to keep going, to try to improve and we know we need to be ready.”

Playing against a side who will have many players missing out due to injuries should help ease Mauricio Pochettino’s gameplan as he could decide to rotate his team around.

Though if he chooses to go for the win, as he has said on his press conference yesterday, then a strong lineup is likely to be selected, despite Watford’s current form (one, one draw and three loses).

But regardless of the players who will be unavailable for Watford, Pochettino is still expecting a tough Watford team to show up tomorrow.

“That’s normal because Watford are a very good team. It’s always tough to play there, like Southampton. You have to be ready in your mind to fight with many games in this period.” Mauricio Pochettino said.

Speaking of many games, January is just the beginning of a hectic schedule with the Europa League resuming in February. And should Spurs manage to advance further in the FA Cup and in Europe, a Premier League title challenge will become that much more difficult.

Spurs have more depth to withstand the pressure of maintaining a high level in three competitions, but at some point Mauricio Pochettino will decide to zero in on one major competition — that being the Premier League first and foremost.

So depending on how Tottenham decides to proceed, they could make things easier for themselves (by bowing out of each tournament) or harder (try to win as much silverware as they possibly can).
