The roster that Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have built in the past two seasons shows why Tottenham are once again Premier League title contenders.

Injuries have taken out some of Tottenham’s starters. Rotation for the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup are expected to happen. And yet, the results have remained the same for Spurs, they’re winning games in recent weeks.

Players have stepped up and helped Spurs clinch second place in the Premiership to begin the month of October. And it’s all because everyone on this team compliments one another.

With many clubs spending freely to bolster their squads for this season, Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have once again preferred to meticulously add key players to an already improving and consistent roster.

Spurs only needed to address their depth this year, and that kind of thought process is what has seen the North London club be in the position that they’re currently in now.

Hugo Lloris said it best back in August, that Tottenham only needed to fine-tune their squad. Not to completely redo it. Which some teams tend to do.

A part of the reason why Spurs have played as well as they have this early in the season is because the starting XI has remained unchanged for the second consecutive year.

In fact, since Mauricio Pochettino arrived, the only positions that have seen some turnover up to now has been the striker, left wing, central midfield, defensive midfield and right center-back positions. That’s a total of five changes in just two years. Everything else has remained the same.

Gone are Roberto Soldado, Emmanuel Adebayor, Nacer Chadli, Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason and Younês Kaboul, the ones who were starters before their spot on starting XI started to diminish.

Some players who weren’t full-time starters a couple of years ago (Mousa Dembélé and Eric Dier) became big contributors during the 2015-16 campaign.

Dele Alli emerged last year as a key figure in Pochettino’s lineup. This year it’s Son Heung-Min. Érik Lamela and Harry Kane are some of the top players in their respective positions. The back line and Hugo Lloris have remained consistent as usual.

All of this, according to Christian Eriksen, points to Tottenham having no weak links in their squad. And it’s very difficult to disagree with the Danish international’s statement after looking back at what Spurs have done in the last two months alone.

“Everyone wants to play, everyone wants to win,” Eriksen told Spurs’ official website.

“We’ve got a very, very strong team and, even if we rotate a few players, the new ones will come in and fill the spots perfectly.”

“Every player who comes in can play in different positions too. Sonny, for example, can play as a striker as well. He’s a different type to Harry Kane or Vincent Janssen so he filled in differently [against Manchester City] but it was the perfect mix on Sunday because City dropped a lot and there was a lot of space to run in between.”

“At the moment there are no weak links and the result is that it only makes us stronger.”

Next: What Happens Now for Tottenham's Janssen?

The past two summers have seen Tottenham secure important pieces to begin the summer transfer window — Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen.

While they would wait until deadline day or near it, to sign the likes of Clinton N’Jie, Son Heung-Min, Pau López, Georges-Kévin N’Koudou and Moussa Sissoko, it’s apparent that all five late additions have helped add depth at multiple positions.

Something which has been key to help rotate the squad in order for Spurs to compete in all fronts. And with Tottenham winning the last five matches in all competitions this term, Pochettino and Levy’s strategy/philosophy of how to fine-tune the team in recent seasons has worked wonders.
