Tottenham’s momentum in the Premier League will be put on hold for the time being due to the international break.

Sunday’s win over Manchester City marked Tottenham’s fifth consecutive win in all competitions and sees them riding a wave of momentum.

When looking at Spurs’ Premier League form alone, their seven-match unbeaten streak is a club-best to start the Premiership, ever. Being in form and playing consistently well has been a huge factor as to why Mauricio Pochettino’s side looks almost unstoppable at the moment.

At the same time, this isn’t a fluke or Spurs just being lucky. Far from it.

Remember, Spurs did begin the year off slowly like they did last season. They ended August with a respectable 1W-2D-0L record but weren’t performing at their usual levels. A 4-0 walloping over Stoke City showed what Tottenham are capable of but they fell back down to Earth courtesy of AS Monaco in the Champions League.

Over time, Spurs suffered their fair share of early season injuries starting with Hugo Lloris before being followed by Danny Rose, Mousa Dembélé, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko.

Yet despite losing key players for a few games, Tottenham managed to earn wins. And in convincing fashion one could argue.

Spurs would out-shoot their opponents, have more possession of the ball and dominate with their high-press. Teams were literally running into a brick wall that could score goals if it had feet and was able to move around.

Defensively, Tottenham is once again one of the best in the league. And their offense is just starting to hit their stride with enough goals being scored to secure wins.

Credit must goes to Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy for going out and buying some much needed depth this past summer.

Not to mention seeing players stepping up to help Spurs continue to run smoothly without any problems when someone goes down with an injury.

It’s been a good two months for Spurs in the Premier League. They have benefited from a much deeper squad than in previous campaigns while also giving quality minutes to backup players who have gone on to produce very well in short spells as spot-starters.

Just before heading off to join his teammates on the France national team, Spurs’ captain and starting goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris spoke, of how Tottenham want to continue performing at a high level.

They’re — as the Frenchman put it — “hungry” to repeat the performances they have displayed from their five-match winning streak.

“In football, it’s a lot about belief and we have some strong basics that we are building up now from the beginning of the Mauricio Pochettino era,” Lloris said on Spurs’ official website.

“I think we’re improving every week, every month. Our team is still young but there is a big appetite here, we are all hungry to get great performances.”

“It’s true you need to be consistent in the [Premier] league but when you get the opportunity to play one of the top teams like [Manchester] City you need to enjoy it and play at your best level, like we did on Sunday.”

“It was also important to win before an international break but we must remember that the season is long and we must always be humble.”

With 11 more days until the Premier League returns it’s a time for some players to earn a well deserved rest. For everyone else who were called up for international duty, it’s a chance to continue their fine form.

There’s always a risk of injury during the international break, which is what happened to Danny Rose, but at the same time Spurs have shown that they’re able to continue performing at a high level regardless of who goes down.

More than anything, this is what has been key to their success early in the season. Playing with a next-man-up mentality that has seen Spurs clinch second in the Premier League table after seven games.
