Tottenham Reveals New Numbers Ahead of Upcoming Season
Tottenham have revealed their new numbers for this season with a couple of surprise additions to the squad even if it goes over the 25-man limit.
Normally when a player receives their number for the upcoming season, it’s a good indicator that they will, in all likelihood, be a part of the manager’s 25-man squad.
However looking at Tottenham’s official Twitter account and the players and numbers tweeted out, there are 36 names so obviously there’s going to be some omissions.

** – indicates an academy graduate or youth player
*** – indicates a player who has no future with Tottenham
Okay so let’s go over a couple of things from this list above. There are indeed 36 players who have been given numbers for this season.
Most likely the ones who aren’t going to be playing this year will be added into Tottenham’s Champions League squad.
If it’s anything like the Europa League, where clubs are allowed to submit two lists, a primary one and a backup one in case of injury or suspension to a team’s starters, then a majority of Spurs’ academy graduates/youth players will be on Mauricio Pochettino’s second list for the Champions League.

Moving on, it’s safe to say that there are actually 35 players and not 36 because Nabil Bentaleb has been told he has no future with the club.
It’s unfortunate after what the Algerian international accomplished two seasons ago, but losing the number six and having it replaced with the number 42 is a huge sign the 21-year-old is gone this year.
As for the players who had a single asterisk next to their name which indicated a player could be sold or loaned out: Nacer Chadli, Tom Carroll, Clinton N’Jie and DeAndre Yedlin (lost #12 to Victor Wanyama), all four have had their futures questioned at one point or another this summer.
Two of them can still feature this year (N’Jie and Yedlin) but at the same time they need playing time.
With Tottenham’s deal for Georges-Kévin N’Koudou almost falling apart, Clinton N’Jie will get an opportunity to be Érik Lamela’s backup by default once again.
But the same can’t be said with certainty for DeAndre Yedlin as Kieran Trippier is still being looked at as Pochettino’s second-choice right-back.

And finally, there are 12 academy graduates/youth players who have been given squad numbers.
A couple of them will actually feature this year (Josh Onomah and Harry Winks) while two more are on the cusp of being fringe first-term players (Cameron Carter-Vickers and Marcus Edwards).
The rest, will most likely play with Spurs’ second team or might get a chance to go on loan.
In the end, these numbers don’t normally mean much except for the players who are close to making the final roster or are almost on their way out.
