A fan favorite, Érik Lamela who had no intention of leaving Tottenham before, has reconfirmed that this is the only club for him since he first joined three years ago.

Last summer Olympique Marseille and Inter Milan were eyeing a move for Tottenham winger Érik Lamela after two seasons in north London. He didn’t have a bad time with Spurs, statistically speaking, but a back injury did however prematurely end the Argentine winger’s debut season.

Then the following year, in 2014-15, he put together a solid campaign with five goals and 10 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions. It was Lamela’s first full season with Tottenham, but even with these numbers it was a tough sell to say that the Argentinian was still worth £30 million.

Now after completing his third year with Spurs (his second full season) since signing from AS Roma in the summer of 2013, Érik Lamela has revealed that he never had once thought about leaving Tottenham despite a difficult start.

It’s easy to understand that some players would be content with leaving quickly after a rough beginning in a different league and environment. But kudos to the 24-year-old winger for sticking through the ups and downs.

Back in May, Lamela stated that he wanted to remain with Tottenham, today he has reiterated his stance: “Ever since I came to Tottenham I have always heard that I am supposed to be leaving,” the Argentine told reporters (via London Evening Standard). “It is the same every summer – I do not know why.”

“From the beginning my focus has always been on Tottenham, even when things did not go as planned at the start.”

“I have never wanted to leave or thought about leaving. I enjoy playing for the club and get on well with all the players, the staff and supporters.”

“I feel a big connection with the club and especially the fans who have always supported me so much.”

After producing consistent numbers in assists for two consecutive seasons with 10, and seeing an increase in goals from five to 11, Érik Lamela has a point in that he shouldn’t leave Tottenham.

Currently he is the starting right midfielder/winger in Mauricio Pochettino’s line-up and with the backup situation a question mark for the time being, he will continue to be a regular in Pochettino’s starting XI.

Not to mention Lamela is hitting a perfect stride in that he has progressed with each passing season in terms of his on-field performances.

As for that backup situation briefly mentioned? Clinton N’Jie (who may or may not go on loan to Marseille this summer) suffered a knee injury that cost him his first year with Spurs.

Since then, the Cameroon international has recovered and is looking forward to providing some good competition for Lamela. But if he’s loaned out it might not happen.

Also, should Georges-Kévin N’Koudou finally join Tottenham (he already passed his medical and both Marseille and Spurs agreed on a £10.8 million fee), it’s to be expected that he will undergo a transitional phase.

N’Koudou will need time to adapt to the Premier League and Mauricio Pochettino will make sure of it, by bringing him in slowly like he typically does with every signing if they haven’t experienced English football before.

In the end, Érik Lamela might not have had a good start to his Tottenham career during the 2013-14 season. But since then, he has slowly risen to become one of Spurs’ better players over the years.

And because of his recent form for two consecutive seasons, it’s no wonder the Argentine can’t see himself leaving north London any time soon.
