5 Worst Moments of Tottenham’s Season
By Peter Brewis
3. Sanchez’s Tying Goal
The North London Derby is one of the best derbies in the English football. It’s two teams and and two sets of fans that absolutely despise each other. Combine real, legitimate hate with actual title implications, and you get one of the most important North London Derbies of all time. And one could feel it while watching this match. The atmosphere was electric, and both teams were ready to battle for vital points trying to chase down Leicester City.
And battle they did, as Francis Coquelin was the first to receive a talking to only nine minutes in, and the first three yellows cards coming in the 26th, 28th, and 30th Even with the fouls and the bookings being handed out freely, Tottenham was the better team for the majority of the first half. And then Arsenal scored. In the 39th minute off of an Aaron Ramsey back heel. It was devastating, but that’s not why this is the third worst moment of Tottenham’s season.

The Top Flight
Tottenham seemed to be stunned by the turn of events. They had been dominating play and the fans had been singing, but now all of a sudden, Arsenal was up 1-0. The second half started with Arsenal controlling the play and Kyle Walker creating a half chance for himself. But then, Coquelin gets his second yellow and Arsenal are down to ten men. This was the chance, the opportunity, the break that Tottenham had been waiting for. Things don’t usually go Spurs’ way, but this had. This match, this derby, this year is going to be different. Only five minutes after Coquelin was sent for an early shower Tottenham found the equalizer, and from who else, but Toby Alderweireld, the defensive talisman who has come into the squad and found a home in the center of Tottenham’s defense. The underrated hero. The Premier League’s best defender.
And it was 1-1.
White Hart Lane was on fire again. Supporters could feel the tension lifting, they could feel the rush of energy that was re-injected back into the team. Once again that glimmer of optimism was there. It’s different this time, they just knew it.
And two minutes after that equalizer, of course he would score. This is his favorite game of the year. “He’s one of our own”, they sing. He hates Arsenal as much as the supporters do; probably more. And for him to score a goal like he did. Reserving the magnificent for the biggest stage. The exuberance and excitement in his face when he ripped off the face mask. He had won the game. Harry Kane had won the game for Tottenham, surely he must have.
This year is different, they thought again.
But then only 16 excruciating minutes later Alexis Sanchez scored to tie the game at two.
This game was no different. Spurs supporters had seen this movie before and refused, for a second, to believe that it would end any differently. But they knew, and it ended the same way it always does. Two more valuable points dropped from a winning position. Against Arsenal.
