4. Thumping from Borussia Dortmund

Oh, how quickly narratives can change. Before the Dortmund match most Tottenham supporters were excited and confident about the Europa League. After handling Fiorentina relatively decisively in the previous round, European confidence was riding high. And coming off of an emotional draw against Arsenal over the weekend certainly added the excitement.

  • The first leg, played at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, saw Tottenham play a heavily rotated side. So heavily rotated in fact that Ryan Mason, Tom Carroll, Josh Onomah, Heung-min Son, Nacer Chadli, Ben Davies, and Kieran Trippier all made starts. This by itself was enough to put a damper on the festivities.

And the actual play didn’t inspire any confidence or celebration either. Dortmund had 64% of the possession, put 10 shots at the Tottenham goal, and scored within the first 30 minutes. All in all Dortmund essentially won the tie in the first leg. Tottenham supporters certainly didn’t expect to win the entire tie, but they didn’t expect such a thumping either. Overall it ended 5-1 on aggregate. A quick reminder of where Tottenham actually are compared to Europe’s big boys.
