Tottenham’s Season in Ten Matches
By Ryan Wrenn
Tottenham 4 -1 Manchester City, September 26th
Less that two weeks after that Sunderland result, Tottenham faced their first big test of the still-young season when Manchester City came calling on White Hart Lane.
Tottenham’s record against the Premier League’s “bigger” clubs in recent seasons had not been exactly stellar. That was especially true against City. Sergio Agüero haunted the dreams of multiple generations of Tottenham centre-backs, and many expected the Argentinian to do so again here.
For the bulk of the first half, that prediction seemed to be bearing itself out. Tottenham looked pensive and not exactly on their game offensively. When Kevin de Bruyne scored off a counter-attack in the 25th minute, the stage for a rout seemed set.
Tottenham came alive after that goal however. Eric Dier leveled the scoring after a mistake by City just before the interval, and Tottenham didn’t stop in the second half. Goals from Toby Alderweireld, Kane and Lamela all went unanswered. By the end of the match, City were well and truly beaten.
Many cited the amount of officiating errors in the match and their impact on at least two of the goals scored in the match. While there’s certainly some credence in that, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Tottenham earned a marvelous victory against a side that had caused them much grief in the past.
