Liverpool 1 – 1 Tottenham, April 2nd

If you had to point out one weakness in this Tottenham side over the course of this season, it might be their trouble with playing against sides that elected to play in a similar style. The loss against Anderlecht earlier in the season first hinted at that weakness, while several moments after that only solidified the impression (see: West Ham’s 1-0 win in March).

A match against Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, then, suggested trouble. The German practically invented the modern pressing style that Pochettino would later fine-tune, and even if his Liverpool side weren’t quite firing on all cylinders in that regard it was clear there was enough there to give Tottenham a headache.

Tottenham had their licks in the first half, but Liverpool declined to give in easily. When Coutinho gave them the lead just minutes after the interval, it seemed as if Tottenham might lose the plot.

Kane leveled Tottenham’s account in the 62nd minute, but Liverpool still stayed in the fight until the end. It was a match that proved that Tottenham still had some progress to make, especially when they face off against a Liverpool side next season that’s more settled in Klopp’s ways.
