Sunderland appears to be targeting Tottenham Hotspur right-back, DeAndre Yedlin for £2 million after spending this past season on a year-long loan with the Black Cats.

A couple of days ago, the Mirror had reported (at the very bottom of their article) that Sunderland were looking at a potential transfer for Tottenham’s right-back, DeAndre Yedlin, who has just wrapped up his season-long loan with the Black Cats.

For the time being, Mauricio Pochettino’s options at right-back are already cemented with Kyle Walker the starter and Kieran Trippier the backup. Both players, are more or less interchangeable and regardless of who started, it shouldn’t cause Spurs to suffer a drop in performance.

However, trying to find a spot for Yedlin is difficult. It’s tough to envision that the 22-year-old will crack into Pochettino’s starting XI in the Premier League or Champions League next season.

At the very least, the U.S. international could see some time in the League Cup, assuming that Spurs don’t get knocked out prematurely like this past season. Or, even get some minutes in the FA Cup.

That being said, here’s what the linked Mirror article had to say about a transfer:

“Sunderland will offer Spurs around £2 million to turn DeAndre Yedlin’s loan move into a permanent deal.”

“The 22-year-old USA international joined Sunderland in September after finding himself behind Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier in the pecking order at White Hart Lane.”

“Those two have impressed for Spurs this season, while Yedlin has enjoyed life with Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light and, with all parties happy for the deal to happen, it should be sorted out soon.”

The last few words “all parties happy for the deal to happen” could be made up.

There’s no news from Tottenham’s transfer committee in which they have agreed — or disagreed for that matter — that a deal will happen soon.

In fact, if Sunderland were to offer Tottenham £2 million for DeAndre Yedlin, that would be slightly less than Spurs paid the Seattle Sounders last January when they offered £2.75 million.

A difference of £750,000 isn’t much in the grand scheme of things, but Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t really had a chance to work with the American right-back.

Granted, there’s no way Yedlin will get much playing time if he’s with Spurs, so it makes sense to just accept the Black Cats’ offer if they are willing to make a move.

Accepting £2 million and using it to buy a different player to bolster another position wouldn’t be a bad move. Except, Mauricio Pochettino had to have some kind of plan when he opted to buy DeAndre Yedlin and then a year later, buy Kieran Trippier before sending the U.S. international out on a season-long loan to gain Premier League experience.

For the time being, this is something worth keeping tabs on because it’s clear that DeAndre Yedlin has potential and his pace could be quite useful late in games.

Now whether he will be a rotational player throughout the season or just an extra body in case of injuries for Tottenham, remains to be seen.

But it would be a bit premature to sign a player, loan him out for a year and then quickly sell him after only giving him one appearance for 11 minutes.

Mauricio Pochettino has been cut throat with shaping this current squad, but surely he can’t give up on a player that quickly.
