After already being named to the PFA Team of the Year for 2016 and winning the Supporters Clubs’ Player of the Season award a few days ago, Tottenham Hotspur center-back Toby Alderweireld has earned another award.

The accolades continue to pile up for Toby Alderweireld this season with the Tottenham central defender picking up his third individual honor after being named to the 2016 PFA Team of the Year with three other Spurs players and collecting the Supporters Clubs’ Player of the Season award.

Alderweireld’s third trophy is the One Hotspur Members’ Player of the Season award which he would receive this past Sunday prior to Tottenham’s home finale against Southampton.

As this honor is another Player of the Season award, it continues to show that Toby Alderweireld’s inclusion into Mauricio Pochettino’s squad last summer after joining from Atlético Madrid has paid dividends.

Not only for Tottenham but for the Belgian international as well in becoming one of the Premier League’s best central defenders this season. His second stint in England’s top-flight division following a season-long loan with the Saints last year.

After receiving the One Hotspur Members’ Player of the Season award at White Hart Lane, Toby Alderweireld spoke about what this accolade means to him.

“I can’t believe it,” said Alderweireld (quotes via Tottenham’s official website). “It’s a great honour.”

“I’m very proud and I want to thank the fans and especially my team-mates. They’ve all worked so hard – everyone deserves a trophy.”

While the Saints would walk away with a 2-1 win over Tottenham in the Lilywhites’ home finale, the 27-year-old is looking forward to the final fixture of the year against Newcastle to cap off a great season.

“Southampton was disappointing but we don’t have to put our heads down,” Toby Alderweireld continued.

“It’s been a great season, we’ve put a lot of effort in and now we have this last game to go out and earn second place.”

After completing a double, in terms of Player of the Season awards, Alderweireld joins an illustrious list of legendary Tottenham players who have lifted the shield (the OHM award):

Gary Mabbutt (1987) was the first winner, Paul Gascoigne (1990), Gary Lineker (1992), Jürgen Klinsmann (1994), Teddy Sheringham (1995), David Ginola (1998), Robbie Keane (2004, 2006, 2008), Michael Dawson (2010), Luka Modrić (2011), Gareth Bale (2013), Christian Eriksen (2014) and Harry Kane last year.

Essentially, as has been stated over and over, the Belgian center-back has been one of Tottenham’s best players throughout this season.

While Harry Kane will continue to gain plenty of praise for his second season as Spurs’ star striker with 25 league goals scored, Eric Dier and Dele Alli making headlines as two of Tottenham and England’s young rising stars, among plenty of story lines. Alderweireld has helped fix a once stagnant defense almost immediately.

To think that Mauricio Pochettino needed just one main defensive signing — even though Kevin Wimmer has proven he’s capable of becoming an alternative to Jan Vertonghen — it was Toby Alderweireld’s presence alongside his compatriot that made Tottenham a title contender.

One thing that prevented Spurs from securing Champions League football a year ago was losing games of course, but also conceding 53 league goals even though they were a top-five team.

In 52 total games for Spurs this season, Alderweireld has made 48 appearances and helped concede only 30 goals in 37 league games thus far. This shows how valuable he has been for Pochettino and Tottenham. And it’s fitting that he has been rewarded with three individual honors, two of which are Player of the Season awards.
