Tottenham will undoubtedly need more players to build up some depth with the return of Champions League football, but Spurs being linked to André Schürrle is nothing more than a rumor.

According to the Mirror, Tottenham have been linked to André Schürrle, who is apparently unsettled at Wolfsburg. Now, it should be noted that with all transfer rumors, everyone must take them with a grain of salt and this latest rumor is another example of why.

The Mirror article, linked above, has no quotes and links involving both Schürrle and Spurs, so there’s already a huge sense of skepticism about a potential move for the German international.

With that being said, as far-fetched as this move could be, it’s not surprising to see Tottenham being linked with a whole hosts of players with the amount of success that they are currently having this season.

Being assured of a return to Champions League football next season, means that Mauricio Pochettino “will be looking to bolster his Club with potential targets.” But, for one thing, no one really knows who the Argentine is looking for as it’s quite a while before the summer transfer window opens.

And two, besides adding more depth, there aren’t many holes on this Tottenham squad to begin with. Not to mention, not costing a lot of money to sign since Spurs are weary of spending much on players now.

But for argument’s sake, let’s take a look at what André Schürrle could potentially bring to this Tottenham team if the 25-year-old was somehow made available.

And if the Mirror’s report of Spurs emerging as a potential destination and working on a deal with Wolfsburg is true — which most likely isn’t.

Because Schürrle plays as a left winger and is capable of playing all four attacking positions (left and right wing, attacking midfield and striker), he is another Son Heung-Min.

As in, someone who can come into the game for either Christian Eriksen, Érik Lamela, Dele Alli or Harry Kane while also being able to add another scoring threat to an already dangerous Spurs squad.

That wouldn’t be bad to have, except Spurs have two players who can fill this role already. One is Son, the other is Clinton N’Jie, except he doesn’t play as an attacking midfielder.

Having three players who can play all four attack midfield positions would mean that someone has to be sold in order to make room. And the only one who could be sold — assuming that André Schürrle is an option to sign — is Nacer Chadli.

Eriksen and Lamela are starters, Son is a part-time starter, N’Jie and Chadli are the rotational players. André Schürrle would essentially replace a depth player and resume the same role he had with Chelsea from August 2014 through January 2015, rather than being a starter, like he was for the Blues during the 2013-14 season.

The 25-year-old’s debut season in the Premier League with Chelsea saw the German winger make 30 appearances, score eight goals and record two assists. Very good numbers no doubt, but it’s highly unlikely that Schürrle would be able to do the same if he won’t start ahead of Christian Eriksen. Or even come on as a substitute before the other wingers that Tottenham have on their team.

At the end of the day, André Schürrle is a talented footballer but even if Tottenham had a need for an additional winger, they signed two last summer and are set as is. Besides, Clinton N’Jie has to get a fair shot to see where he stands in the pecking order behind Eriksen, Lamela, Son and Chadli after he returns to full fitness.

The very least that Mauricio Pochettino could do is inquire about André Schürrle’s services. But other than that, Schürrle would be nothing more than a backup and would hardly see any action if Tottenham’s wingers are fit and not injured.
