After England beat Germany last Saturday, they fell to the Netherlands yesterday. At the very least though, all five Spurs players got some minutes in the game.

Although the match against the Netherlands was only an international friendly in name, losing a game is never a good feeling. Especially after England staged a dramatic 3-2 win over the reigning World Cup champions, Germany, last Saturday.

Following the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Holland yesterday, the Guardian talked about five things that they learned and they were (in order): the diamond formation works despite a few problems, Kyle Walker could have an edge over Nathaniel Clyne for the right-back position, England’s defense is a cause for concern, Wayne Rooney’s spot as the team’s striker is boosted by Daniel Sturridge’s failure to shine and the Dutch’s youngsters restore their nation’s pride with a win.

However this article will focus on Spurs and how their players did during the game.

Now while England’s loss to the Netherlands is a step backwards in some aspects for the Three Lions — namely the defense — on a different level, seeing Spurs’ five players get some minutes is a good sign prior to the Liverpool match this Saturday.

Still, Harry Kane feels disappointed with the final results and it’s hard to blame him.

Because after Jamie Vardy got England on the board from a Kyle Walker cross, Danny Rose’s handball gave Netherlands their equalizer with a Vincent Janssen penalty kick. Then leading up to Luciano Narsingh’s match-winning goal, Phil Jagielka appeared to be fouled in the build-up which unfortunately went unnoticed.

“It was a disappointing result,” Kane told Sky Sports. “I don’t think we probably played as well as we did the other night. That’s football.”

“I think the decisions could have gone either way from where I was sitting, but sometimes you have to deal with that in European football.”

“Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t. We have to get on with it and move on quickly.”

Interestingly enough, while Spurs had all five players play in the game, Roy Hodgson decided to sub Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Kane instead of other players. Now whether that’s because all three Spurs players happen to be playing some of their best football this season and were the only better options, that remains to be seen.

In any event, while Harry Kane’s spot on the national team is all but secured heading into Euro 2016, he acknowledges that England needs to improve before the summer begins.

“Like we said after the Germany game, we’ve still got a lot to work on, we’ve still got a lot to do,” Harry Kane added.

“We’re a young side, learning, and that’s all we can do.”

“Obviously it’s disappointing, we always want to win games of course, but we haven’t done. So now we go back to our club form and then get ready for the friendlies before the Euros.”

Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose should all be given a chance to earn a spot on Roy Hodgson’s squad, but there are other good midfielders as well as full-backs so it’s not an easy decision to make for the England manager.

Speaking of Kyle Walker, he was the only Tottenham man to go the full 90 minutes with Danny Rose making way for Nathaniel Clyne in the 58th minute — no doubt following his handball that gave Netherlands their equalizer six minutes after the second half started.

Harry Kane would be introduced in the 70th minute, with Adam Lallana coming off and Dele Alli came onto the pitch in the 82nd minute replacing James Milner just moments after Luciano Narsingh put the visitors ahead. Before Eric Dier rounded out the all-Spurs substitutions with six minutes remaining in the match.

As a whole, England lost a “friendly” game sure, but there’s still some work that needs to be done heading into the European Championships. But when it comes for Spurs, it was nice to have all of them get playing time and not sit on the bench after they’ve been in form all year long.

Michel Vorm by the way, was the only Spurs player who didn’t see time on the pitch as he was an unused substitute and only an emergency option following Netherland’s starting goalkeeper, Jasper Cillessan’s, broken nose injury.
