Tottenham defender, Toby Alderweireld is confident that they can surpass Leicester City to win the Premier League title at the end of the season.

The international break is almost over but that hasn’t stopped Toby Alderweireld from looking ahead to Tottenham’s final seven games and erasing a five point gap to go on top of Leicester City before the season ends on May 15.

With Tottenham’s season bearing plenty of highlights — minus August and October which produced only one win in all competitions — there’s a good reason why every player and fan is full of confidence once the Premier League returns this weekend. When Spurs take on Liverpool at Anfield on April 2nd.

To be second behind league leaders, and surprise title contenders, Leicester City, while also boasting consistency for the last five months from November to March, anything can potentially happen.

Because to be fair, that’s exactly what has happened this season when the top four has been completely shaken up with both the Foxes and Spurs in while Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are on the outside looking up at them.

Also, if Manchester City continues to drop points while West Ham proceeds to win some more games, 80 percent of the big five clubs in England’s top-flight division might not finish in the top four this season.

Therefore it’s only right to expect a confident north London club who could potentially end a 55-year drought of not having won a league title since 1961. This is something that Alderweireld believes will be broken sooner rather than later.

“We are confident in our team, if we keep working hard and at the same level we have been we can beat any team,” Alderweireld told Sky Sports.

“That’s not arrogance, it’s confidence and that’s the way we have to play.”

“We just have to focus game by game. It’s a cliché but it’s the way we have to play. We have seven finals left so let’s start at Liverpool.”

To make that kind of statement, it shows just how much of a difference maker that the 27-year-old Belgian has been since his arrival last summer.

At the time, an £11.5 million transfer fee which was paid to Atlético Madrid was a moderate price to pay to help fix a defensive problem next to Jan Vertoghen.

However, after making 42 appearances this season in all competitions (31 in the Premiership) and forming the best central defensive partnership in the Premier League while conceding a league low 24 goals in 31 matches. There’s enough reason to justify Alderweireld’s comments and his confidence in his own abilities as well as the team’s to get the job done.

Mind you, this is with 22 1/2 games playing alongside Jan Vertonghen before partnering up with Kevin Wimmer for the past 8 1/2 games.

So honestly speaking, it’s not far-fetched to think that Tottenham can actually overcome Leicester’s lead in seven games or less.

Because as is, the Foxes have been cutting it close recently with their last few fixtures ending in one goal wins.

At the end of the day, wins are all that matters and not necessarily how good or bad it looked, because as the old saying goes: winning cures all.

But truth be told, the more that Leicester continue to hold onto a 0-0 draw late in games before picking up last minute goals, it could spell doom.

Seeing as how Tottenham have managed to score the most goals this season with 56 goals and having a healthy plus-32 goal difference being the highest in the entire top-flight division.

Scoring that many goals will eventually push Leicester into second place if both Spurs and the Foxes wind up level on points once the season is over.

For Tottenham, to be able to sign Toby Alderweireld (at a bargain price), he has not only been a huge boost for the team’s defense but also for helping Spurs become a legitimate title contender. As well as perhaps being the best defender right now in the Premier League.

Although, the Belgian international is humble enough to deflect such praise.

“I’m enjoying this season. It’s wonderful at Spurs and I’m really happy, so I’m just trying to keep my level until the end of the season,” Alderweireld added.

“It’s their right to say it but I don’t feel that way. I’m just trying to help the team and do my best. I don’t like to talk about myself, other people are paid to do that. I try to do my best on the pitch and that’s it.”
