For the Tottenham Hotspur faithful, Daniel Levy has a bit of a mixed reputation, since becoming chairman on February 2001.

Alright, that might even be too generous. Levy’s itchy trigger finger when it comes to managers, plus his penchant for a hard-won transfer deal, have at times alienated the Tottenham fanbase. He can occasionally look out of the touch with the modern game, a classic example of everything that is wrong with the back offices in football.

Most of which is unfair. Yes, Levy has some high standards and he’s difficult to negotiate with, but can anyone really say that they’re unhappy with the results? Tottenham have finished in fifth place or better in the Premier League since 2010 thanks in no small part to the managers and players Levy has had a huge hand in picking. There is simply no denying that the last five years of Levy’s reign have been a boon for the club as a whole.

Today we’re going to look at some of the most palpable ways Levy has influenced the club: transfers. This isn’t simply going to be a list of the best transfers, either. No, to get a full impression of Levy’s legacy, we’re going to break it down in five different categories that showcase which were Daniel Levy’s best and worst transfers since taking over as Tottenham’s chairman in February 2001. Here’s the list in order:

  • Top Five Best Transfers
  • Top Five Worst Transfers
  • Top Five Best Bargains
  • Top Five Most Expensive Transfers
  • Top Five Best Youth Players Signed

There naturally might be some overlap and no small amount of controversy, but in seeing Levy’s efforts qualified and quantified like this we might begin to understand just how much Tottenham fans owe their often maligned chairman.

We begin with the five best transfers.
