Tottenham Hotspur Links: Arsène Wenger Wary of Tottenham’s New Stadium

A late morning edition of Tottenham Hotspur Links to read for the day.

Tomorrow will be the second north London derby of the season between Tottenham and Arsenal. A win for Spurs will see them climb up to fifth place and sit one point behind Manchester United once again. This game will be the biggest game for Tottenham and 12 games into the 2015-16 Premier League season, it is a season-defining game for Spurs. A lot is on the line for Mauricio Pochettino’s team. Onto the news down below.

Once Tottenham’s new 61,000 stadium is set to open for the start of the 2018-19 season, Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, would see Spurs challenge the Gunners on a financial level. Here’s Wenger on the matter:

"“It is the biggest challenge we face. It will be purely down to the technical quality of work. On a financial level, we always had level power because when we had 37,000, 38,000 seats [at Highbury] we were level. After we moved into the new stadium we had less financial resources than them because we had to pay our debts back. That was always the case. Now, maybe in the last two or three years we are in a stronger financial situation, but that will not last because they build a new stadium as well.”"

Financially speaking, Tottenham won’t be able to compete just yet, since they would have to pay back their debts after moving into the new stadium. But once that happens then surely Tottenham and Arsenal will be level once again. Until then it’ll be just a bit longer, perhaps another two or three years after Tottenham’s new stadium is open when they can get the financial resources to sign players.

According to the report provided by HITC, Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, visited London this week to watch Tottenham take on Anderlecht in their Europa League match on Thursday night. Ausilio has apparently scouted Érik Lamela and Jan Vertonghen to help improve his team with an idea to sign them this January.

Lamela being scouted makes sense, due to Inter Milan’s involvement with the Argentine winger this past summer when it was unknown if Érik Lamela would produce a fine season like he has so far. However now that the 23-year-old is one of Tottenham’s best players this season, it’s highly unlikely that Spurs would part ways with him.

As for Jan Vertonghen, yes the Belgian center-back will be able to upgrade Inter’s defense but it wouldn’t be the best move for his career. Vertonghen finally has a partner to work with and has helped Tottenham own one of the best defenses in the Premier League.

He recently made 100 appearances for Tottenham and has said that he would love to make it to 200 appearances if he’s able to. Consider both Jan Vertonghen and Érik Lamela Spurs players for a long time.

Shaq Coulthirst has returned to Tottenham after making only two appearances and playing for 53 minutes before suffering an injury. While his loan deal has expired and must now recover before playing again, his Spurs career is far from over. If he was tipped to have a bright future as a teenager during his time in Tottenham’s youth academy, then those days are still coming for him in the near future.

The 21-year-old striker is having to deal with an injury and a short loan spell that Miloš Veljković had endured twice before ultimately settling in with Tottenham’s second team in the Under-21 Barclays Premier League. It’s quite possible that once Shaq Coulthirst is fully recovered from injury he could feature in Tottenham’s Under-21 team or get an early promotion to the first team and learn from Harry Kane as the understudy. It’s not a make-or-break season for Coulthirst, but it’s apparent that he needs to play games.
