Current 10-Game Unbeaten Streak in Premier League Means Nothing to Tottenham Manager Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has plenty of things to worry about and a ten match unbeaten streak isn’t one of them.

Call it being humble or too focused, but Mauricio Pochettino isn’t being abrasive when people continue to bring up Tottenham’s unbeaten run in the Premier League which spans the past 10 games — five wins and five draws. The Argentine manager acknowledges that Spurs haven’t lost since the first game of the season against Manchester United which was due to a Kyle Walker own goal. But there are more important things to worry about according to the London Evening Standard.

“It means nothing. In football it’s all about the present. The next game is very important. It’s true — 10 games unbeaten — but we need to keep our focus. We’re in a good position in the table [fifth in the Premier League] but we need to think in the present and prepare because we have a very important game against Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday.”

As the London Evening Standard put it, Tottenham’s opening day loss to Manchester United is the only blotch on their record. With the season progressing, each passing month, that single loss to Man United stands out even more.

Spurs should have won that game and they could have very well gotten a draw as well. But earning a loss on an accidental play made the difference.

Even without Kyle Walker’s own goal, this doesn’t take away the game that Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero had in the season opener. Sure, the Argentine keeper had his fair share of questionable decisions on when to catch or parry the ball. Or when he should have played an easier ball to a teammate with Harry Kane approaching. But losing a match on an own goal is more of an asterisk for both clubs on their records.

Looking back at Tottenham’s unbeaten streak in the Premier League it has been met with ups and downs on a monthly basis. For whatever reason, Spurs have seen their momentum run through a hot and cold streak after three months of football.

When August was unraveling, it was an auspicious start for Mauricio Pochettino’s side who were supposed to be better than they were a year ago. After losing once and drawing three straight — which Spurs had a chance to win all of those games — the month of September fixed that.

Tottenham’s hot start in September (four wins in five games) proved that Tottenham started the season off slowly. A loss against Arsenal in the third round of the Capital One Cupwas the only blemish.

Following September, October should have seen the Club take that next step and improve even more. Instead, Tottenham had a reverse August by starting with three draws and then losing one game. Spurs almost had a second winless month if it wasn’t for a 5-1 win over A.F.C. Bournemouth. Between August and October, October was worse because the team was coming off of a very successful September. Injuries aside, Tottenham let points slip away with too many draws in two months. Still, Spurs remain as one of the hardest teams to be this season.

So far, November is starting off well, but this month will be the most difficult for Tottenham right now. A Thursday night home game against R.S.C. Anderlecht in the Europa League will be a test for Mauricio Pochettino’s side who have to take care of business on matchday four after losing the first leg. Three days later, Spurs travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal on Sunday. Arsenal is in Tottenham’s way from clinching fourth place with only twelve games played in the Premier League.
