Tottenham would begin their Europa League Group stage match at home against the reigning Azerbaijani Premier League champions, Qarabağ FK. Not only would this European match be just four days after Spurs’ first win in the Premier League this season, on the road against Sunderland, but it would be a midweek fixture which will add more difficulty to Tottenham’s schedule as usual.

When it comes to the European competition — and domestic cups as well — teams tend to rest all, or a majority of their starters, in order to play their youth players so that they can focus on the big picture. Namely doing good domestically in hopes of reaching the Champions League for next season, or for the elite clubs — champions of England. However, that kind of plan didn’t seem to be the case for Mauricio Pochettino on Thursday night.

The Argentine coach deployed a few starters at key positions and sprinkled in a couple of summer signings along with academy graduates. The end results showed a team that could play some very entertaining and creative attacking football. Of course, while Qarabağ aren’t world beaters, they shouldn’t be taken lightly. A final scoreline of Tottenham winning 3-1 can show that Spurs are able to come back after conceding an early goal by putting immense pressure on teams to force turnovers and eventually score.
