Spurs’ Carter-Vickers should be promoted within a few years.

At just 17-years-old, Spurs have a promising youth player who is being compared to one of the club’s most storied players in history, Ledley King. Obviously it’s far too early to make such lofty comparisons between Cameron Carter-Vickers and Ledley King, but based on pure potential and talent alone, it’s not far-fetched. Carter-Vickers is a player who could possibly be promoted within a few years.

Getting ready for the Olympics with Andi Herzog’s Under-23 U.S. international squad, Cameron Carter-Vickers recently conducted an exclusive interview with ProSoccerTalk (which is a great read by the way).

After recently competing in the U-20 FIFA World Cup back in June at New Zealand, despite being the youngest player on Tab Ramos’ squad and anchoring the backline for USA. The Yanks would reach the quarterfinals before losing on penalties to eventual World Cup champions, Serbia. Now, the English-born, U.S. international is hoping to make it onto the U-23 squad before the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro.

Upon getting invited to camp, the 17-year-old spoke highly about training for the Olympics and competing at the U-20 FIFA World Cup.

"“I’ve really enjoyed it. It is a new group of players and it is a bigger test. We are going to be playing better teams than we were at the U-20 level. It is always good to test yourself. It was a really good experience. “When you play against a lot of different nations with lots of different styles, you learn a lot. I do think we could have gone further but I think overall we did well. The U-20 age group, we are really close and I think we’ve really bonded well so coming up to the U-23s, it will benefit us.”"

With the amount of youth on Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cameron Carter-Vickers’ name listed on the first team in the near future. The Argentine coach has a track record of giving youth players a chance. With Ugo Ehiogu, Spurs’ U-21 youth coach and a former center-back plus Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, Carter-Vickers has the best environment to succeed.

One sign of the young center-back’s current rise with Spurs is wearing the captain’s armband for the first three matches this season in the U-21 Premier League.

“For the first three games I have been captain, which is a great experience. It gives me added confidence and when I go out to play I can just go out there and focus on playing. It is really good. He [Pochettino] gives youth a chance and he looks for hard work so as long as you are always giving 100% and you’re being honest, then it will be good.”

One of Cameron Carter-Vickers main goals for the time being is making sure that he’s a part of Andi Herzog’s U-23 squad for the Olympics. A long term goal for his country would be making it onto the senior national team.

“I would love to eventually play for the full national team. Whether it is in two, three, five… however many years, that is the goal. At the moment I am focused on the U.S. and every camp I’ve been in I have really enjoyed it.”

As for his club level goal, being promoted to the first team is something that Carter-Vickers will be looking forward to. But for now, CCV still has plenty of time to develop before being called up within a few years.
