Earlier today, news broke of Tottenham and Eric Dier reaching a contract extension to keep the center-back/defensive midfielder for another five years until 2020. In what has been a recurring theme as of late this year — players signing contract extensions — this isn’t surprising. Locking up a young talented jack-of-all-trades player in Eric Dier is a smart move by Tottenham and reconfirms that the club will retain their most valuable players by rewarding them with new deals.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder joins a growing list of Spurs players who have extended their careers with Tottenham: Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Ryan Mason, Nabil Bentaleb, Josh Onomah, Harry Winks and Alex Pritchard.

Signed from Sporting Lisbon in July 2014, Dier enjoyed a good first season overall. While there were some inconsistencies, the English international proved his worth acting as an emergency right-back and playing as Jan Vertonghen’s partner at center-back until the 2014-15 season ended. Eric Dier went on to make 36 appearances in all competitions, 28 of which came in the Premier League.

Now playing in a new role, this time as a holding midfielder, Eric Dier has made the position his own and is one of the bright spots early in Tottenham’s season. The U-21 England international is now firmly etched into Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven and looks to cement himself as the team’s main holding mid for the rest of the season — or until Tottenham decides to sign someone to compete with him.

Following the signing, Eric Dier talks about Tottenham moving forward.

"“If you look at the Training Centre, the young squad, the new stadium coming through – the club is in a great place and as long as we stick together, everything is looking very exciting. There is a great core here of young players and even the likes of Christian, Érik, Kyle and Danny are all still young. We have a young team, a core of young English players and young players in general and there is such a great future for the club.”"

Continuing on about the club, Eric Dier talks about his first season with Tottenham and how much he knew about Spurs before joining them last year in the summer.

“I believe in myself and my quality but I didn’t really know what to expect and I didn’t think I’d play that many games.”

“I was really happy with my first season but there is still a lot of work to do, I need to keep improving and I’ll keep on giving my best.”

“I always knew it was a big club when I signed but to come here and play in the Premier League, you realize how big the league is and how big this club is in the league. You go to away games and the away end is packed and our fans are making as much noise as the home fans, it’s amazing. When you play at the Lane it’s brilliant as well, an old stadium packed with history. I loved every minute of my first season and to now sign a new deal for another five years, I’m happy and looking forward to the future.”

Here’s to many more great seasons for Tottenham’s new holding mid, Eric Dier!
