The game felt – to paraphrase Mauricio Pochettino – like a defeat. After an excellent showing in the match’s first half, Spurs earned the kind of result in the second half that has become almost synonymous with the club’s name. A penalty earned by the opposition followed by a dip in form that saw a second goal conceded minutes later.

That kind of haphazard reaction to a mistake is all too common with this team. There was some hope that Spurs’ ability to sustain the level of quality after Kyle Walker’s own goal last weekend against United might haved hint at some change at the club in the offseason. The late collapse in this most recent game sullied whatever optimism anyone had about the club – and in particularly the players’ – psychological health.
