A Team Of Players Linked To Tottenham In Transfer Rumours

facebooktwitterreddit

Many players were linked with a possible transfer to Tottenham. Throughout the summer the media was a constant source of rumours and speculation about players who could be arriving at White Hart Lane.

The transfer window has closed for another summer and Tottenham have signed left-back Ben Davies from Swansea, young defender Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon, central defender Federico Fazio from Sevilla and a defensive midfielder, Benjamin Stambouli, from Montpellier. Right-back DeAndre Yedlin was signed from Seattle Sounders and returned to the Us team on loan.

Spurs enquired about other players but were linked with many times more players – enough to field ten teams.

I have selected just one team from players who were connected with Tottenham by media sources during the summer transfer window. Some of the players did change clubs but others have remained with their clubs.

Goalkeeper: David Marshall

David Marshall had an outstanding season for Cardiff City in the Premier League. He was linked with Spurs while the club considered alternatives should Hugo Lloris decide to return to play in France. Marshall is still with Cardiff, playing in the Championship.

Right-back: John Stones

Spurs were reported to have made an offer to Everton for John Stones but had it quickly rejected.

Central Defender: Hector Moreno

With the knowledge that Tottenham were looking to sign a central defender, the impressive Hector Moreno was linked with Spurs during his World Cup appearances for Mexico. With Mauricio Pochettino’s connections to Espanyol, it was suggested that a transfer could be possible. Breaking his leg during Mexico’s match against the Netherlands ended any hopes of the Espanyol defender moving to north London.

Central defender: Mateo Musacchio

At the end of July, the transfer of Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal was expected to be completed within days. Agreement was reportedly reached between the clubs but then wrangling between his club and River Plate, his former club, along with third-party ownership issues dragged on until Spurs had to look elsewhere, signing Federico Fazio.

Left-back: Alberto Moreno

Spurs were reported to be interested in signing Alberto Moreno from Sevilla. Put off by the high transfer fee Spurs, instead turned to Ben Davies. Signing for Liverpool, we saw on Sunday how effective Moreno could be at left-back.

Right Midfield: Antoine Griezmann

Antoine Griezmann impressed for France during the world Cup finals. Spurs were linked with a possible move for Griezmann but he opted to leave Real Sociedad for Atletico Madrid rather than White Hart Lane.

Central Midfield: Morgan Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin, the Southampton and France international midfielder seemed the perfect match for Tottenham. Mauricio Pochettino wanted to sign his former player, Schnedierlin was keen to move to Spurs but then the Saints turned very unsaintly and refused to sell him. Spurs hoped that by playing the patient, long game Southampton would give in but they didn’t so Spurs signed Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier.

Central Midfield: Jack Rodwell

Spurs were reported to be interested in signing Jack Rodwell from Manchester City but he joined Sunderland.

Left Midfield: Memphis Depay

Another player who impressed during the World Cup was Memphis Depay. The PSV Eindhoven winger started the season well and there were rumours of Tottenham interest. Depay then signed a new contract with PSV putting an end to that speculation.

Striker: Loic Remy

It was reported that Spurs had reached an early agreement with Loic Remy but he was waiting for Arsenal to decide on their options. He wanted a Champions League club but none came with Spurs still linked to the QPR striker but then at the last moment Jose Mourinho and Chelsea swooped to sign him.

Striker: Wilfried Bony

Spurs and Swansea conducted quite a lot of business over the summer with Davies, Michel Vorm coming to White Hart Lane and Gylfi Sigurdsson moving to Wales. Tom Carroll has joined on loan for the season while the Academy graduate Giancarlo Gallifuoco has also signed for Swansea. There was talk of Tottenham interest in Wilfried Bony, even on the final day of the transfer window.

In the final hours, SkySportsNewsHQ reported that the agent of Wilfried Bony had confirmed he was staying at Swansea and that Spurs had been interested in him.
