The responses in the HotspurHQ 2013-14 season survey, to the question of which player fans wanted Tottenham to sign during the summer identified Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea as their number one target.

Q. 9: Which player would you like Tottenham to sign?

Tottenham fans, in their response to this question identified two major areas of concern. As would be expected, there was a wide range of players listed as possible signings, with a total of 38 players mentioned, covering all areas of the team, apart from goalkeeper. The main worries of fans focused on the need to sign a striker and a left back.

The fans solution for a goalscoring striker was Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea who received 23% of the votes. He had a successful season on loan at Everton and his goals played a major part in Roberto Martinez’s team finishing ahead of Tottenham.

At left back which has concerned Tottenham fans for the past few seasons, there was no clear target but a number of options were provided as a possible signing.

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgium international striker signed by Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2011, has had two successful seasons in the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion and Everton. He has, however, played only 15 games for Chelsea without scoring a goal. At Anderlecht he scored 41 goals in 98 appearances and has scored 33 goals in the past two seasons.

Every year Chelsea sign a top striker

Romelu Lukaku spoke recently of wanting away from Stamford Bridge, as reported in the Daily Mail.  Such comments are bound to create a great deal of interest at clubs across Europe. The World Cup finals in Brazil will give him an opportunity to show his worth, having scored a hat-trick in a recent friendly against Luxenbourg, although it has had to be expunged from the record books as Belgium used too many substitutes during the game.

Romelu Lukaku is 21 years of age and would provide a great focal point for the Tottenham attack, being able to score himself as well as holding the ball up, allowing other players to work off him.

There are doubts, however, over whether Chelsea would be prepared to sell a prize asset to Tottenham, probably preferring that he went to a club in Spain or Italy where there are clubs who are interested in signing him.

Left Back

Left back has been a troublesome position for Tottenham for the past number of seasons with neither Benoit Assou-Ekotto nor Danny Rose impressing supporters. The fans solution to this particular issue is not as clear but 25% of voters identified it as an area of concern. The players suggested as possible signings included, Ashley Cole (8%), Luke Shaw (7%), Leighton Baines and John Stones.

More from Tottenham News

  • Cole, having been released by Chelsea would bring vast experience to the team but at 33 years of age would be a short-term solution.
  • Shaw is inexperienced but is an exceptional talent who has excelled at Southampton. He is thought to be moving to Manchester United this summer but a recent report in the Daily Express suggested that Louis van Gaal may have other targets for the left back spot, including Jordi Alba from Barcelona.

Tottenham will want to keep an eye on this situation, hoping that Mauricio Pochettino’s presence at Spurs could influence Shaw’s decision but Chelsea will also be aware of the position.

  • Two other Southampton players who figured in the thoughts of Spurs fans were Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez.

Fans have identified two problem positions which Tottenham will need to address this summer but will the club take steps to resolve the problem or will it be another year of making do with the players who are already at White Hart Lane?
