Tottenham News: Jan Vertonghen, Erik Lamela, Michael Dawson…
By Logan Holmes
The recent news stories on Tottenham have concerned reports about Jan Vertonghen, Erik Lamela, Danny Rose, Michael Dawson, Jake Livermore, Alex Pritchard and Heurelho Gomes.
The World Cup training camps are providing papers and media sources with a constant stream of stories from interviews with different players. This time it is comments from Belgian defender, Jan Vertonghen on his future at Tottenham which have attracted attention.
Jan Vertonghen
There have been doubts for some months about Vertonghen’s plans for next season. As it became clear that Spurs weren’t going to finish in a top-4, Champions League qualifying place, he had made remarks about having to consider his future in the summer. After a disappointing season in which he was absent for two lengthy periods through injury, many suspected that the central defender would look to get away from White Hart Lane. His heart didn’t seem to be with the club and he appeared to have issues with Tim Sherwood. More recently, his remarks suggested that a decision would be made after the World Cup and that the appointment of the new manager could have a bearing on his decision.
Now with his comments, reported by SkySports, suggesting that he intends to remain at Tottenham next season, he has come alongside other players who have made similar remarks in recent days, including Hugo Lloris, Nacer Chadli, Paulinho and Sandro. Vertonghen said,
"I’ve got a couple more years at Tottenham and I’m happy, and I want to stay there, so it doesn’t matter who the manager will be."
there are other good managers
Vertonghen was captain of Ajax under Frank de Boer, leading them to the title in his final year in Holland and while acknowledging that de Boer is a good manager, admits there are other managers who could do well at Spurs.
If the players who have been quoted recently, it is a very positive news for Tottenham and Daniel Levy as he seeks to complete the appointment of a new manager.

Erik Lamela [Jav The_DoC_66]
Erik Lamela
A report in the Sunday Express suggests that Lamela could return to Italy as he is a target for Inter Milan. With limited opportunities in the Tottenham team, difficulties with acclimatisation to a new country and injury which kept him out of the team since January, Lamela’s first season in England was a total washout. Fans are eager that Lamela should be retained and given a chance to establish himself in the Premier League. If Tottenham were to sell the Argentine they would be looking to recoup as much of their initial outlay as possible. Inter Milan appear to have the financial backing to complete such a transfer but whether they would be prepared to meet Tottenham’s expectations on the fee will be an issue.
Danny Rose/Michael Dawson
The Mirror have reported that Tottenham are to offer Danny Rose a new contract. He has two years remaining on his current contract but with the article reporting an interest from West Ham, Spurs may be trying to warn off clubs.
The Hull Daily Mail have a story that City are considering a move for three Tottenham players – Rose, Michael Dawson and Jake Livermore who had a successful season on loan with Hull.

It is understandable that Steve Bruce is very keen to secure the signing of Livermore and the other two Tottenham players could become available when the new manager is appointed. Michael Dawson would be following in the footsteps of his older brother, Andy, who played for Hull for many years.
Alex Pritchard
The Mirror have a report that Wigan Athletic would like to take Pritchard on loan. He spent last season with Swindon Town in League One and on his return at the end of the season was among the Tottenham substitutes for the final two games, making is debut against Aston Villa. This could be a good move for the young player to gain further experience under Uwe Rosler at Wigan who are a club likely to be challenging near to top of the Championship, having reached the FA Cup semi-final last season and only missing out on the play-offs in the last few games.
Heurelho Gomes [Jav The_DoC_66]
Heurelho Gomes
As we know Tottenham released Heurelho Gomes at the end of the season. He has now signed a one year contract with Watford with the possible extension of an additional year. Gomes was an impressive shot-stopper but struggled with the intensity and constant pressure of the Premier League which brought highs and lows in his time with Spurs. His confidence took a battering and he eventually lost his place with the signing of the Brad Friedel who used his experience to bring a greater sense of calm to Tottenham’s defending.
We thank Heurelho for his part in Tottenham getting into the Champions League in 2010 and wish him every success with Watford.
