Tottenham Hotspur 5 Southampton 1
Scorers: Defoe (3), Kanoute, Keane Crouch
Southampton have been involved in a number of high-scoring games against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
Southampton’s game at White Hart Lane in December, 2004 will not bring happy memories for them but will create good vibes for Jermain Defoe who scored a hat-trick in Spurs’ 5 – 1 win. Fredi Kanoute and Robbie Keane provided the other goals.
Defoe put Spurs ahead after 8 minutes. He added a second with just under half an hour played and then Kanoute made it 3 – 0 just before half-time. Early in the second half Peter Crouch pulled a goal back for Southampton but Defoe completed his hat-trick on the hour and Keane added a late fifth.
Southampton were relegated at the end of the season and they didn’t return to the Premier League until May, 2012, with back to back promotions having dropped down to League One.
On a personal note, this match is memorable to me as it was my daughter’s wedding day. With a number of Spurs fans at the wedding including a season ticket holder from north London, guests kept me up-to-date with proceedings at White Hart Lane during the reception that afternoon. A cause for celebration all round.
