Spurs have lost on their last three matches at the Etihad Stadium but they have been very close affairs. Prior to that they had achieved 6 wins in 10 Premier League games with 2 draws. It’s time for Spurs to return to winning ways at City and there would be no better time than today.

Last Meeting:

November, 2012  PL  Lost 1 – 2  Caulker

It is just over a year ago that the two clubs met at the Etihad Stadium. Spurs took a first half lead when Steven Caulker headed home from a free-kick. Andre Villas-Boas had opted to start with Emmanuel Adebayor as his lone striker. It was Adebayor’s first League start of the season and he responded against his former club. He caused the City defence problems throughout the first half. After the interval City changed formation and went three at the back, introducing Maicon on the right side of midfield. Jan Vertonghen at left back found him difficult to handle and eventually City equalised after 65 minutes through Aguero. With two minutes remaining Dzeko got the better of Michael Dawson and hooked a shot past Brad Friedel.

Previous Meetings:

January, 2012  PL  Lost 2 – 3  Defoe, Bale

Tottenham were hot on the tails of the two Manchester clubs at the top of the table but had drawn at home to Wolves the previous weekend. In the game at White Hart Lane, City had given Spurs a football lesson in a 5 – 1 win. It was another late goal which brought about Spurs downfall.

In an even contest Spurs came back from conceding two goals in three minutes in the second half to Nasri and Lescott. They drew level within six with goals from Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale and in the second minute of added time were inches away from winning the game when Defoe failed to make good contact with a cross from Bale. City were awarded a penalty with fifteen seconds remaining when Ledley King fouled Balotelli, the substitute who should have been sent off for a stamp on Scott Parker. Balotelli took the penalty beating Friedel with ease to secure a late win. So nearly a great day for Spurs – a performance to be proud of but ultimately very disappointing.

May, 2011  PL  Lost 0 – 1

Another close encounter with Champions League qualification at stake. Peter Crouch scored from an almost identical position to twelve months earlier but unfortunately it was into his own net. It was Spurs who finished the stronger and City fans were relieved to hear the final whistle which meant Spurs lost any chance of a top-4 finish.

Spurs Last Win

May, 2010  PL  Won 1 – 0  Crouch

Spurs last success at the Etihad Stadium couldn’t have come in any more dramatic circumstances as Crouch’s goal in the 82nd minute put them into the Champions League at City’s expense. On the night Spurs deservedly took the spoils.

Nov. 2008  PL  Won 2 – 1  Bent (2)

Spurs recovered from going a goal behind after 16 minutes to level through Darren Bent thirteen minutes later. He scored the winner after 64 minutes, to make it 7 goals in 5 games as the Harry Redknapp revival continued.

March, 2008  Lost 1 – 2  Keane

Robbie Keane had given Spurs a first half lead after half an hour. City recovered after the interval and scored twice in 13 minutes midway through the half.

Unbeaten in 7 Games

Dec. 2006  PL  Won 2 – 1  Davenport, Huddlestone

Spurs were two up after 25 minutes and although City pulled a goal back with over 25 minutes to play, Spurs held on to win for their fifth success in their last 7 League visits to City.

Jan. 2006  PL  Won 2 – 0  Mido, Keane

The first match of 2006, Spurs started the new year in style. Mido put Spurs ahead after 30 minutes and Keane completed the scoring with 7 minutes remaining.

Dec. 2004  PL  Won 1 – 0  Kanoute

Fredi Kanoute scored a tremendous second half goal as Spurs recorded their third successive win and their third clean sheet in a row.

Sept. 2003  PL  Draw 0 – 0

Dec. 2002  PL  Won 3 – 2  Perry, Davies, Poyet

Two days before Christmas and Spurs gave fans an early present. Spurs went behind after 29 minutes but were level ten minutes later through Chris Perry. Three minutes after half-time Simon Davies put them ahead and Poyet added the third six minutes from time. City scored a second in the last minute.

Feb. 2001  PL  Won 1 – 0  Rebrov

This game marked the fifth consecutive Premiership match in which Spurs kept a clean sheet. The goal scored by their record £11m  summer signing Sergei Rebrov in the 89th minute was the first in the same period and brought Spurs their first away win of the season.

Aug. 1995  PL  Draw 1 – 1  Sheringham

On the opening day of the season Chris Armstrong made his Tottenham debut. Teddy Sheringham put Spurs ahead in the first half but City equalised in the second half.

Through the Premier League era Spurs have had a very impressive record at City. It would be great if they were to pull something unexpected out of the hat today to keep apace with the leaders in the Premier League.
