Who Will Leave Tottenham In This Summer’s Transfer Window?

Which players will leave Tottenham in this summer’s transfer window? A number of players are expected to leave Spurs during the close season to make room in the squad for new signings and for younger players coming through from the Academy and Under-21 team.

A week or so ago the Mirror named a number of players who are expected to leave White Hart Lane during the summer. The list included not just squad players but some who have been an integral of the team in the past season. The suggested list of players who could be moving on:

Emmanuel Adebayor, Clint Dempsey, Jermain Defoe, William Gallas, David Bentley, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Heurelho Gomes and Danny Rose.

Many of those players have contributed little over the past coupe of seasons so it’s no surprise to see their names included on the list. There had been speculation that Huddlestone and Parker may have left last January but the injury to Sandro in the middle of the transfer window brought an end to any loan deals as Spurs tried to utilise their squad to replace the Brazilian.

Today, a report in the Daily Mail suggested that the aim of Tottenham’s clear-out of players is to raise funds to finance a deal to encourage Gareth Bale to renew his contract and remain with Spurs for another season. This latest article added the names of Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jake Livermore to the ever growing list.

"“He’s an extremely important player for us. We have Danny Rose coming back and Zeki Fryers so we have to make the best decision [for next season].”"

HotspurHQ list of Expected Departees:

David Bentley and William Gallas are to leave when their contracts expire this summer and I would expect Tottenham to be open to offers for a number of the other players.

  • Heurelho Gomes went on loan in January and has played no part in the team for the past two seasons. He was injured towards the end of his loan spell in Germany so if recovered he will be another player expected to leave this summer.
  • Either Emmanuel Adebayor or Jermain Defoe could leave. Defoe may be the easier player to shift with the possibility of a number of clubs in England being interested. It may not be as easy to find a buyer for Adebayor with his high salary so it may depend on whether any overseas clubs show interest.
  • Jake Livermore has had little opportunity in the past season and has not been as involved with the team under Andre Villas-Boas as he had been with Harry Redknapp. He had been expected to go out on loan last January but Sandro’s injury may have put a block on that as well as it being reported that the player was reluctant to leave.
  • Scott Parker was less influential this season and is behind both Mousa Dembele and Sandro for a place in central midfield.
  • Kyle Naughton failed to get a regular place in the team even with the injury to Assou-Ekotto as Jan Vertonghen filled in at left back on a regular basis.

The club will be open to offers for a number of players but I would expect Danny Rose after his season with Sunderland to be given the opportunity to prove himself to AVB at White Hart Lane. The same opportunity may also be extended to two other players who went out on loan in January – Andros Townsend and Iago Falque.

Other younger players may not be so fortunate as Spurs try to reduce the size of their playing staff to accommodate new signings and younger players coming through. By the end of June some of the Development squad will probably know their fate. Dean Parrett has already been released while John Bostock, Simon Dawkins who was with Aston Villa after time in America with San Jose Earthquakes and Ryan Mason may be among those released.

To any players transferred or released in the coming weeks we wish them well and hope that they can further their careers at a new club.
