Last season’s Match:

April, 2012  PL  (h) Lost 1 – 2  Defoe

Norwich maintained their good away record with a fifth success. They deserved their victory and could have added to their score in a game where Tottenham were lacking in fight and inspiration. Norwich went ahead early on but Defoe equalised before half-time. A second Norwich goal midway through the half secured the points. The result left Spurs’ Champions League Qualifying hopes hanging by a thread as Chelsea and Newcastle moved ahead of them in the Premier League table.

Previous Matches:

Sept. 2004  PL  Draw 0 – 0

Norwich had returned to the Premier League for the first time after being relegated in 1995. They last only one season but earned a draw at White Hart Lane to claim their third point of the season from five matches.

A game which Spurs were expected to win turned out more difficult than expected and the result was regarded as two points lost rather than one point gained.  Spurs had the better of the match without taking their chances and in the end Norwich did create opportunities to score in the second half.

Jacques Santini was Tottenham’s manager and his emphasis on defence was paying off as Spurs recorded their third clean sheet at the start of the season. They had, however, managed only four goals from the five matches.

April, 1995  PL  Won 1 – 0  Sheringham

Teddy Sheringham scored his 21st goal of the season as Norwich City slipped towards relegation with their fifth successive defeat. Spurs continued on their attempt to claim UEFA Cup football for the following season. The winning goal came in the 36th minute from a Darren Anderton cross as Sheringham controlled the ball to put it past the goalkeeper. The visitors almost snatched a last minute equaliser with a 25-yard shot hit the cross bar.

December, 1993  PL Lost 1 – 3  Barmby

It was Tottenham’s biggest crowd of the season, to date, but they went home disheartened as Spurs had a record of only one win in twelve League games. The main concern for the supporters was the need for a striker! Deprived of the long-term injured Sheringham, Spurs were toothless in front of goal. Norwich were two up at half-time through Sutton and Ekoku but Nicky Barmby pulled a goal back with seventeen minutes to go. Norwich secured the win when Sutton scored his second  in the final minute.

April, 1993  PL  Won 5 – 1 Sheringham (2), Allen, Nayim, Ruddock

The first of the Easter matches gave Spurs a convincing win over Norwich City on Good Friday. The win lifted Spurs to fifth place in the League with 52 points, their highest position in the League that season. With a further seven games to play they only accumulated another seven points to finish in eighth.

Norwich had spent most of the season in a position to challenge for the Premier League title but the defeat at White Hart Lane brought an end to those ambitions. They were to finish in third place, twelve points behind Manchester United and two behind runners-up, Aston Villa. A week earlier Spurs had lost at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final to Arsenal.

After 27 minutes, a thunderous free-kick by Neil Ruddock lifted a subdued White Hart Lane and three minutes later they witnessed an even better goal when Darren Anderton’s cross was met by Teddy Sheringham. In the second half, Sheringham’s header on 54 minutes allowed Nicky Barmby to head the third. Barmby returned the favour by starting the move which brought Sheringham’s second and Spurs’ fourth after 77 minutes. With seven minutes to go, Nayim scored the fifth with a solo run before Norwich managed to get on the score sheet three minutes later. Nayim’s transfer to Real Zaragoza was confirmed the following week.

Early Days

Tottenham and Norwich first met in the Football League in the 2nd Division in December, 1939 and resulted in a 2 – 1 success for Spurs. In those early days Spurs lost only two of the 22 home matches between 1938 and 1993.

The clubs had previously met in the Southern League.
