Tottenham Hotspur spent a lot this summer transfer window, but they have nothing to show for it, getting blanked 2-0 by Newcastle United to now make it a 5-0 aggregate loss in their first two matches of the 2026/27 Premier League season against Brentford and the Magpies.
Here are the stars and the flops from Tottenham's latest putrid display.
Flop: DM Sandro Tonali
This was Sandro Tonali's big moment to shine against his former employers, but he totally flopped. Tottenham had no control over this game and deserved to lose, with Tonali having issues dictating play and actually setting into the game. So far, he does not look like he's worth even half of 100 million pounds.
Flop: CB Micky van de Ven
Micky van de Ven has to do a better job of actually driving Tottenham forward in possession, and his defending against Newcastle was mediocre at best. This was far from a dream season debut for him without Cristian Romero.
Star: ST Omar Marmoush
At least the new attacking signings look like they will pan out. After Savio impressed off the bench against Charlton Athletic, Omar Marmoush was the only credible attacking threat for Spurs vs. Newcastle with three key passes and three dribbles completed in his debut.
Flop: LW Mathys Tel
Meanwhile, Mathys Tel was so bad that he looked like he was playing for the other team. Every attack that went to him ended up in the ball going to Newcastle, as he literally created nothing with no dribbles completed or fouls drawn while having six unforced errors on the ball. This was embarrassing.
Star: AM Mateus Fernandes
Tottenham gave Mateus Fernandes the start as the No. 10, and he was, once again, the only true standout midfielder of the night. Fernandes was Spurs best creator once more from midfield with three chances created, and he defended well. If only the others could step up, too.
Flop: RB Archie Gray
Archie Gray at right back experiment has to come to an end. This was an objectionable performance at the position, and while Gray was far from Spurs worst player, this scheme has to end because it is not helping anyone, least of all Gray himself.
Flop: LB Andy Robertson
Destiny Udogie can't be worse than this. Andy Robertson just does not have the juice on the ball in the Premier League, and Newcastle totally nullified the left flank. Tel was the worst player on the pitch, sure, but Robbo was not much better for Spurs.
