Tottenham Hotspur still can't buy themselves a win in the Premier League, as they fell 3-2 to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon after going down 3-0 to start the game. The adjustments were beneficial but too little, too late for a Spurs side that finally scored some goals but could not stop the other team from finding the back of the net. Luck was not on their side again, but Spurs do need to perform better. Here were the stars and flops as the attackers starting the game struggled before the ones later bailed them out a bit.
Flop: ST Dominic Solanke
Dominic Solanke is clearly not the answer at the striker position, and even though Roberto De Zerbi keeps trying to put him in a position where he can claim the starting job, what he shows is nowhere near good enough. Even though he plays in the middle, Solanke looks like the least likely player on the pitch to score a goal, and that is a huge problem.
Star: RW Savio
Savio tends to fade as the game goes on, and whlie he offers little goal threat, even as an inverted winger, he consistently leads Tottenham in key passes and dribbles completed, grabbing four each again in this 3-2 loss to Aston Villa. At least he is the one guy in the starting 11 doing things and taking people on to create real chances.
Flop: LW Omar Marmoush
Meanwhile, Omar Marmoush is scoring and creating nothing, and he legitimately looks like the flop of the summer transfer window if he keeps this up. After a promising debut against Newcastle United, Marmoush is playing like he is allergic to both the ball and the goal.
Star: CB Jan Paul van Hecke
Jan Paul van Hecke scored a late consolation goal, created two chances, and both defended and passed the ball well in another decent performance at the back. He is the one guy for Tottenham in the defense who can actually say that he played a good football game all around in giving up three goals.
Flop: AM Mateus Fernandes
Mateus Fernandes was so woeful that even Roberto De Zerbi had to hook off the 85 million pound Tottenham Hotspur signing at the half. James Maddison's return cannot possibly come any sooner for Fernandes, whose brief run of form as a make shift No. 10 has abruptly come to a screeching halt.
