It was not pretty and it was honestly more disappointment for Tottenham Hotspur, but they were at least able to get a point out of their match against Nottingham Forest this weekend for their first point of the 2026/27 Premier League season after three games. Here were the stars and flops from another subpar display to kick off the new campaign.
Star: DM Sandro Tonali
Finally, Tottenham got to see encouraging signs from Sandro Tonali, who was actually one of the worst players on the pitch in their first two matches of the season. The Italian international struggled to get a foot hold on games and was even getting beaten up defensively, but that changed against a Nottingham Forest without Elliot Anderson.
Tonali was solid, winning the ball assertively defensively while passing the ball accurately. He still needs to do more in terms of driving the ball forward and creating chances, but this was an improved display. He was probably the best player on the pitch.
Flop: ST Omar Marmoush
Meanwhile, Omar Marmoush disappointed after a strong debut last weekend against Newcastle United under more trying circumstances. Although he excelled even without much support from Tonali last weekend, he struggled this weekend with a great game from Tonali. Marmoush did have a couple of dangerous dribbles, but they amounted to nothing. He struggled to pose a real threat, created zero chances, and lost the ball way too easily. he has to do better.
Star: CM Rodrigo Bentancur
Rodrigo Bentancur has been a very pleasant surprise in the Tottenham Hotspur lineup ever since returning from injury last season, and the Uruguayan international did it again for Spurs on Saturday afternoon vs. Nottingham Forest.
He was close to elite defensively in his reading of the game and bailing out of the defense, and like Sandro Tonali, he helped Tottenham control much of the game. You can see how Bentancur fits Roberto De Zerbi's ideas, and it was a great decision not to sell him.
Flop: LW Mathys Tel
Mathys Tel drew the start despite last weekend's disaster class against the Magpies, but if he keeps playing like this, his days are numbered after Tottenham signed De Zerbi favorite Mykhaylo Mudryk. Tel was awful again, practically tripping over himself to lose possession time and time again. He created more than Marmoush but only marginally so. The Frenchman will be under a microscope in his next start, whenever that is.
