Dominic Solanke praises Harry Kane's character
By Tom Vinall
For the first time, current Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke, and former striker, Harry Kane, were in a squad together. Solanke's maiden England call up in 2017 came as a result of Kane picking up an injury, but this time they were in the squad together.
They did not feature together, with Kane injured for the game against Greece, where Solanke picked up an assist off the bench, and in the win over Finland - Solanke was an unused sub. However, they were still in camp together for a week, and had time to chat about things.
Speaking to the Independent, Solanke said: "Yeah, of course, we spoke a lot while we were there together and we have this [playing/played for Spurs] in common now so we spoke and he is a great guy. A great lad to learn from.
Not really [any advice given to me]. We were just speaking about his experiences and stuff like that. Obviously, he has done so much in football and it’s nice to pick his brain.”
There have been a number of players that have spoken about Kane's leadership, and how is he behind the scenes, welcoming new players and everything else. Solanke explained the nice words given to him by Kane back in August. Other than the obvious goals and assists, when he left the club in the summer of 2023 - there became a leadership void too.
Fortunately, Heung Min-Son has taken that leadership baton under his stride and has really helped in the new Ange Postecoglu era.
Whilst Solanke isn't going to score as frequently as Kane, and he will do well to have comparable numbers, there has been plenty of discourse recently about who would be a better fit for Spurs under Ange Postecoglu.
Whilst Kane is a phenomenal goalscorer, and top playmaker, he is not a mobile player who can press like he did in the early years of Mauricio Pochettino. Solanke's pressing has been praised by many this season, leading the press and helping Spurs regain the ball high up the pitch. In Saturday's win over West Ham, there were a number of presentable opportunities that came from high turnovers.
Ange's side are in the 98th percentile across teams in the top seven leagues for pressing this season, and there is no doubt that Solanke is a big reason for that. There is a great compilation of his pressing and link up play in a Spurs shirt so far - which you can view here, if you like.
