Tottenham spent the majority of their match against PSV not playing particularly well but they also showed exactly how lucky they are to have a player like Harry Kane in the team.

Any team in the world would be better off for having Harry Kane in it.  He is one of if not the best striker in Europe and it is obvious particularly on nights like the one in London against Mark Van Bommel’s very strong PSV side.

Having watched Spurs go down to an early goal in the 8th minute one could be forgiven for thinking that this was going to be another shambolic and embarrassing evening for the Lillywhites as they continuously try to make an impact in Europe’s premier club competition.  It says a lot about the young coaching talent of Van Bommel just how well and resiliently his side played.  In terms of sheer quality his PSV are far outmatched by Tottenham at almost every single position.  That said they kept their shape well and moved the ball around the park with intent and resolve.

Ultimately though the match did seem to be going in the direction of a boring loss.  What a shame that would have been.  The final nail in the coffin of this proud Tottenham Hotspur side’s attempts in Europe once again coming to early it seemed.

It would have been even more annoying given all the signs around London claiming Spurs as the only place a football fan could see European competition this season. Having Tottenham so completely out of it this early would have been the sort of embarrassment that all the other London clubs are seeking for Spurs.

Then though as has happened so often in his career so far came Harry Kane.  Cometh the hour and cometh the man.  Harry Kane is nothing less than a hero for Tottenham Hotspur.  He may as well have a big S emblazoned to his chest under his uniform given his importance to the side.  Not since Gareth Bale famously showed himself to Europe by defeating Inter Milan almost entirely on his own while ending the career of Maicon has it been so obvious who Spurs’ true and generational talent is.

A loss here and it was over.  Done. Dusted and undisputed.  Tottenham would have been surely out of Europe.  This though is different.  There is hope again.  Just a little flicker of it sure, but that’s enough.  Many a great European campaign has been built on less than that.  Tottenham have Harry Kane and on nights like this one that proved to be enough.
