Tottenham’s early lead quickly evaporated after Leicester City equalized just minutes into the second half. Eventually, the game ended in a one-all draw.

As a team, Tottenham will be disappointed with their fifth draw in the Premier League. On an individual level, Vincent Janssen is happy to finally get the monkey off of his back after scoring his first Premier League goal this season.

The fact that Janssen scored from the penalty spot yesterday is fitting as he bagged his first two goals in similar fashion during the League Cup’s third and fourth rounds.

Whenever there’s been a penalty, one player who has stepped up to take the shot is the 22-year-old Dutchman. And after getting fouled in the box, it was evident he would do the same thing once again.

Even Dele Alli called it as soon as the play developed. “He loves a penalty! As soon as it was given I knew he was going to run after the ball and everyone was confident he was going to put it away.” Alli said in his post-match interview.

It’s true, no one would take the penalty except Vincent Janssen.

“I thought ‘this is my penalty’,” reflected Janssen (via Spurs’ official website). “The gaffer threw the ball to me and when I stood behind it, I knew it was going to be a goal. It was a great moment.”

More from Match Reports

“The fans have been right behind me all the time, they are such good supporters and I wanted to give them something back. I’m glad I was able to do that with a goal.”

Alli and Son Heung-Min were quick to congratulate Janssen for his hard work after the past three months of seeking the one thing that eluded him in the Premier League. And that was a goal.

“He’s a great player, it was only a matter of time before he got his first goal in the Premier League and now hopefully he can get some more.” Alli commented.

“Vincent ran towards the ball straight away, he wanted to score his first Premier League goal and I’m very happy for him. I want to congratulate him.” Son added.

Despite giving Tottenham the early lead, Vincent Janssen’s goal wouldn’t last long as Leicester City quickly equalized a couple of minutes after the second half was underway.

Even after scoring his side’s lone goal, Janssen was not happy with the outcome of the match. Who could blame the 22-year-old? This was a game Tottenham needed to win to keep pace with the teams above them.

Down by two points from Chelsea and three behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, have seen Spurs leave a golden opportunity to close the gap this early in the season slip by them.

Janssen may have scored, but he wanted to do more to help his team out.

“Our intention before the game was to win the game and at the end if you have one point then you are disappointed.” Vincent Janssen explained.

“Leicester let us play football in our half and then used the counterattack. Okay, they are very good at that and have a lot of qualities on the counterattack but we were much better and deserved the three points.”

“I want to help the team, holding the ball, that’s what I’m like as a striker and I’ll go on like that, I want to be more than a goalscorer.”
