Three reasons sacking Mourinho was a positive for Tottenham

Daniel Levy made one of the biggest decisions a leader can make on Monday as he sacked his manager and his staff. Suffice it to say that the Jose Mourinho experiment at Tottenham Hotspur just did not work. The timing, circumstances, and culture all combined to produce what will likely be recalled as a tragic failure. However, some things could come together to make sacking Mourinho, just the right medicine at the right time for Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham needs a win for the fans

The history of struggles in winning any silverware since 2008 is well documented. However, the losing does take a toll after a while, particularly on the fans. Last week alone, Tottenham was mocked by a dog and a new partner. This was before another blown lead. Which of course came before the big announcement that Tottenham is one of several teams leaving the Champions League. Now, the coach is gone. Of all those events, only one is likely to make any fans anywhere happy, which is the sacking of Mourinho.

Mourinho was always going to have a difficult time winning over a large portion of the fanbase. Then add in the redundant media nitpicking every little detail and comparing it to the previous stop or four, this marriage was never going to last. At this point, for those fans – like myself – who wanted so desperately to believe in Mourinho, his sacking is a relief.

One does not have to be on Twitter or any other media long to see the division within the fan base and that is worse than division in any locker room. Divided houses do not stand and axing Mourinho certainly helps bridge some gaps in the fanbase immediately.

Spurs might get a bounce

Whatever the format of continental competition next season, it sure would be nice to think that Tottenham Hotspur earned their place. Yes, the 5% chance of making the top four is laughable but a Europa League spot is not.

Tottenham has struggled to put together wins and a new voice is sometimes what a team needs to get a little bump in performance. If ever a team was in need of a bump in performance it is Tottenham. Since leading the league for the first time in forever, the Spurs have been performing at relegation levels and have fallen out of every competition they could.

With six League games and a Cup Final coming up on Sunday,  little bounce might be just what this team gets. One can hope anyway.

Tottenham players are on notice

Okay, they did it, the divided locker room and the half-ass performances led to the sacking of one of the most successful managers in history. After having already forced Daniel Levy’s hand giving up on Mauricio Pochettino, this is the second manager this same basic group of players has let down. More importantly, last I checked none of them have a £15 million buy-out.

If Daniel Levy is willing to spend the money to buy out Jose Mourinho, then hopefully that means he is also willing to spend the money to get rid of the deadwood. If I were an underperforming player at Tottenham, I would be VERY concerned about who comes through the door next. The antics worked because Mourinho creates this atmosphere of chaos, how long can that continue?

Pochettino talked of a painful rebuild. Mourinho simply called out his players. Levy is the guy with the strings and now it is his job to start moving the players that continue to not perform. Sure it is easier to get rid of a coach than 25 men but 25 men were just put on notice, let’s hope they got it.
