Finding a complement to Harry Winks Tottenham’s priority
Since making his breakthrough in 2016/2017, Harry Winks has established himself as one of the more unique midfielders in the Premier League. Finding his complement is crucial for Spurs’ future success.
Winks, after returning from injury to start the Champions League final, looked as if he had never been out what was one of the strongest Tottenham performances. Playing at the base of the diamond, Winks absorbed loads of pressure, often in complete silo. There is no doubt that Winks has combined well with Moussa Sissoko, but the dynamic duo could use a versatile addition to complement their strong suits.
So far, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso are Tottenham’s main targets . Each would reinforce a depleted position. With Winks growing into that starting role in the centre of the pitch, buying a suitable partner for him is Spurs’ primary goal.

Ndombele, who plays for Lyon in France, is most likely to fit that bill. While Winks has often been the main recycler of the ball for Spurs, he needs a partner who can drive it forward, much like Sissoko did this season. However, due to Sissoko’s limited passing range, an alternative option is needed for the starting XI.
Ndombele possesses the same strengths as the aforementioned midfielder, but with a bit more passing ability. Too often this year, with Moussa driving forward, Winks was a lonely figure in the centre of midfield. For Winks to thrive, he needs a more disciplined player beside him, which Ndombele can be.
The Frenchman was a revelation for Lyon last season and his signing would show real intent from Tottenham. Seen as one of the better midfield prospects in the world, Ndombele is destined for a move abroad and to a top club.
He has even said Tottenham would be a great place to land.
"“Tottenham are a great team, a big club. They finished fourth in their league and reached the Champions League final. They are a big club and what player would not be interested by a big club?”"
With the player showing obvious interested, Spurs need to do everything in their power to obtain his signature. With Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama both out of favour at the moment, fresh blood is needed to drive Tottenham forth.
While not as much of a true centre mid as Ndombele, Lo Celso is also an attractive option for the squad. The Argentinian is more of an Eriksen mold in terms of his playing style, and is a very talented young player. Lo Celso would bring more goals to the side, something that has been lacking from most of Tottenham’s central players.
Depth is needed at this position, and if both players can be signed, Tottenham would enter the 2019/20 looking particularly dangerous. Neither will come cheap, though, with Lyon asking over $60m for Ndombele and Real Betis $70m for Lo Celso.
This is a chance for Spurs to be brave, and they simply must to take it. A new-look Tottenham side could make a real run in the league next season, but the aforementioned signings have to be made.
Tottenham already have a potential world-class midfielder in Harry Winks; all they need to do is turn that into two or three.
