Tottenham and Christian Eriksen are nearing on a contract extension that will see him remain with Spurs until 2021.

Since joining Tottenham on August 30, 2013 from Dutch side, Ajax, in a modest £11 million deal over three-and-a-half years ago. Christian Eriksen has made 114 appearances, scored 28 goals and provided 27 assists in all competitions for Spurs.

It has been a very good return for Daniel Levy’s investment in the Danish international. And because the 23-year-old has been one of the club’s best signings in recent seasons, Tottenham are set to reward Christian Eriksen with a new deal according to a report by Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey.

Once terms are finalized, the Danish midfielder will be the latest Tottenham player to commit himself to Spurs’ long term plans and remain a key piece with the team. It’s a great sign to see that Mauricio Pochettino is identifying talent that his predecessors brought to the club and has made them the corner stones for Tottenham’s future.

Per the numbers by Football Insider, the 23-year-old playmaker is set to receive a healthy increase in his current wages from £60,000-a-week on his current deal (which still has two-and-a-half years remaining) to £80,000-a-week and earn a total of £22.9 million with the new contract running until 2021.

After being a consistent player since his arrival, it’s only natural to award a long term contract extension to one of Tottenham’s best players who has helped steered the ship in the right direction as Spurs’ main source of creativity from the number 10 role, for over three-and-a-half years.

A record three time Danish Player of the Year winner in consecutive years, Christian Eriksen told Danish broadcaster TV 3 Sport last month about a possible contract extension that was in the works at the time:

“We are talking [about a contract], so it is coming, yes. Well, it looks positive.”

Based on the numbers that Eriksen has compiled since joining Tottenham, it’s not a surprise to see him getting a new and improved deal. Seeing as how he’s meant so much to the club from the very beginning.

Seasons with Tottenham (in all competitions):

  • 2013-14 season: 36 appearances, 10 goals, 12 assists
  • 2014-15 season: 48 appearances, 12 goals, 5 assists
  • 2015-16 season (still ongoing): 30 appearances, 6 goals, 10 assists

For a player who has averaged 42 appearances, 11 goals and 8.5 assists in two full seasons with Tottenham — not including this year because it’s still ongoing — Eriksen is set to repeat that feat once again for a third consecutive year in two out of three categories: appearances and assists.

However, when you actually do look at Christian Eriksen’s current form this term. Despite suffering a knee injury that kept him out for a total of four games, he has still managed to record 16 total goals (scoring himself and providing assists) in 30 appearances.

Those are good numbers to have and it will only get better as the season continues with Tottenham still in contention in two other competitions, that being the FA Cup and the Europa League. Not to mention, a third of the Premier League still left to be played (13 matches).

Now just how much has Christian Eriksen meant to Tottenham since transferring from Ajax in the summer of 2013? It’s safe to say that the Danish midfielder is as important as Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembélé, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli, and Nacer Chadli who were signed in recent seasons.

Some players are more important than others of course. But perhaps it’s safe to say that Daniel Levy has been able to sign talented players to complete Tottenham’s spine in just a few years time.

Securing the club’s number one goalkeeper in Hugo Lloris. Forming a quartet of defensive dominance in an all-Belgian central defense with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld and a blend of youth and experience at the double pivot with Eric Dier and Mousa Dembélé. Plus having two wonderful number 10’s in Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen who can alternate.

As a whole, this has seen Tottenham stockpile talent in recent transfer windows. Not to mention keeping ahold of their star players for the foreseeable future. And the latest name to join that list soon, is Christian Eriksen.
