On this day, 12th August, 1967 Manchester United, the League Champions hosted Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in the FA Charity Shield. Spurs had finished the previous season in third and expectations were high for an entertaining match.

A week previously, Tottenham had taken on Glasgow Celtic, the holders of the European Cup in Glasgow. The match had ended in a draw and had also been a six goal thriller.

Manchester United 3  Tottenham Hotspur 3 (FA Charity Shield)

Scorers: Charlton (2), Law                               Robertson, Jennings, Saul

Team: Jennings; Kinnear, Knowles; Mullery, England, Mackay; Robertson, Greaves, Gilzean, Venables, Saul.

Tottenham fielded the same team as had won the FA Cup in May when they defeated Chelsea 2 – 1 in the Final at Wembley, while United had Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best on display.

Spurs took an early lead after two minutes with Jimmy Robertson putting them ahead from a cross by Jimmy Greaves. Five minutes later, Pat Jennings played a long clearance down field which bounced between Alan Gilzean and United’s goalkeeper, Alex Stepney. The ball sailed over the head of the stranded goalkeeper and into the net. What was more incredible Jennings scoring or Tottenham two up at Old Trafford in less than ten minutes?

Spurs should have added to their lead, as three minutes later Frank Saul hit the bar and Mike England’s shot from the rebound smashed against a defender on the line.

United recovered quickly and were level by the twentieth minute, scoring twice in two minutes through Charlton.

Early in the second half Saul put Spurs ahead again but with fifteen minutes remaining United drew level when Law tapped in after Jennings had parried another thunderbolt from Charlton. The two clubs shared the trophy.

Two of Tottenham’s three goals were scored by the goal scorers in the Cup Final – Robertson and Saul.

A match report commenting on Tottenham suggested,

After their draw against Celtic last week, this was another triumph for Spurs. They looked the better balanced side with a stronger defence, and although their attack isn’t glittering with talents such as United’s, it has more than enough skill to guide in speed and strength‘.
