Spurs midfielder James Maddison has had an impressive start to the 24/25 season, providing goals and assists whilst putting in top performances in general, particularly with his playmaking.

The always superb DataMB’s numbers have been crunched and they back up what we have seen with our eyes – that Maddison is really having a cracking start to the season.

As a reminder for those that perhaps do not know, when it comes to perecentiles – the higher the better. So if a player is ranked in the 99th percentile for a particular stat, it means that they are in the top 1% of players in the selected competition.

Along those playing in the Premier League this season, the Spurs number ten ranks in the; 96th percentile for key passes, 92nd percentile for passes forward and for passes forward accuracy, the 88th percentile for progressive passes and the 75th percentile for progressive carries.

When compared to Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool, Maddison is notably ahead when it comes to all of the above stats mentioned - high praise.

Meanwhile, when in comparison with Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City, Maddison is ahead when it comes to all of the same stats other than progressive passes. Seriously impressive.

So, where can Maddison improve? Well, the 27-year old is in the 49th percentile for duel % and 8th percentile for defensive actions. Whilst the latter can be in part attributed to Spurs domination and territory, it could still improve – and the duel % shows that when he is contesting duels, he is only coming on out on top 49% of the time.

In this new role, where he is playing as one of two number eights, along with Dejan Kulusevski, defensive contribution is key and there is no doubt this is an area Maddison can improve in. When it comes to on ball work, he has been nearly flawless and deserves huge praise.
