Tottenham and Arsenal reportedly still battling for 23-year-old Spanish signing
By Manuel Meza
Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, both with strong first-choice goalkeepers, are gearing up for a transfer market showdown this summer. Even with Guglielmo Vicario for Spurs and David Raya/Aaron Ramsdale for Arsenal holding down the fort, the fierce rivals are eyeing a potential new signing.
Spurs struck gold with the acquisition of Guglielmo Vicario last summer. The Italian goalkeeper has not only cemented his position as Tottenham’s number one but has also become one of the standout keepers in the Premier League. His performances have brought stability and confidence to the Spurs' defense, making him an invaluable asset.
On the other side of North London, Arsenal reinforced their goalkeeping department by bringing in David Raya from Brentford. With Raya and Aaron Ramsdale in their ranks, the Gunners have a strong duo capable of competing at the highest level. This depth has given manager Mikel Arteta flexibility and reliability between the sticks.
Despite their current stronghold, both Tottenham and Arsenal are looking to bolster their squads further. According to a report from Sport (h/t Sport Witness), the two clubs are keen on signing Espanyol’s young goalkeeper, Joan Garcia. The 23-year-old impressed towards the end of last season, catching the attention of several top clubs, including Real Madrid.

While Real Madrid is also monitoring Garcia, their move hinges on the departure of Andriy Lunin. Conversely, Tottenham and Arsenal are ready to make a move immediately. Garcia's release clause, set at €25m (around £21.06m) and valid until 2028, poses a significant question: Are Spurs or Arsenal willing to invest this amount for a potential backup goalkeeper?
Tottenham’s current goalkeeping roster includes Fraser Forster, who is recovering from injury, and Brandon Austin, who recently signed a new contract. Alfie Whiteman also remains in the squad, though he is lower in the pecking order. With Vicario likely to start most games and Forster and Austin available for cup matches, a new goalkeeper might not be Spurs’ top priority this summer.
At the moment, it looks like both North London giants are pretty happy with their main goalkeepers. But chasing Joan Garcia shows they're thinking ahead and want to strengthen their squads. Whether this turns into an actual transfer is up in the air, but it's obvious that Tottenham and Arsenal are exploring every option to stay on top.
What do you think—should Spurs invest in Joan Garcia for the future, or stick with their current goalkeeping lineup?
