3 things Tottenham should change against Everton in Premier League GW2
By Kian Long
Tottenham Hotspur did not rise to the occasion in their opening Premier League fixture of the season. Ange Postecoglou started the game brightly, with an exciting team selection and one which started the game brightly. However, in the second half, the momentum shifted and Tottenham failed to probe Leicester's goal more, which cost them after Jamie Vardy scored.
Tottenham let their heads drop in the game but they must pick themselves back up again before GW2. They have under a week to assess what went wrong and rectify those mistakes. From Ange Postecoglou's perspective, he will definitely not allow them to happen again.
So, which changes do Tottenham need to make in preparation for their second game of the season against Everton?
3 things Tottenham must change against Everton in Premier League GW2
1. Introduce Lucas Bergvall sooner
In the first game of the new Premier League season, Lucas Bergvall was handed an unsurprising debut for Tottenham Hotspur. The teenager impressed for Spurs throughout pre-season, so he certainly had this moment coming.
Where Spurs were previously lacking that bright spark, Lucas Bergvall did everything in his power to provide that and it showed why Tottenham made the punt to bring him to the club. He was introduced to the match in the 78th minute and he turned it around. Unfortunately, though, the result didn't reflect this, through no fault of his own.
It would be a huge jump for Lucas Bergvall to start in the next match. This is not expected and it would probably be silly for Postecoglou to make such a step-up so soon. However, Bergvall should certainly be given more of a chance to prove himself. Providing the game allows for it, Bergvall could make a key difference, when given more time to create for Spurs.
2. Think about subs before making them
Sounds obvious, right?
Against Leicester City, Ange Postecoglou did not appear to have a plan after the result was snatched from his grasp. In fact, Tottenham only looked clueless after conceding the equalising goal and the substitutes did nothing to improve the game (with the exception of the aforementioned Lucas Bergvall, of course).
Long story short, the substitutes made Tottenham very front-heavy, which was not in their favour. They ended up overcrowding the Leicester box and they lacked any real purpose in their build-up play. Ange would have been much better off making balanced subs, rather than playing into the game too much.
Still, this is only a critique which can made in hindsight. Hopefully, the game against Everton will be better controlled and the result will be in Tottenham's favour. Then, Ange can put more thought and apply prudence to his changes.
3. Start Dejan Kulusevski
Brennan Johnson was by no means a weak point for Tottenham and my aim isn't to paint him out as one. In fact, he was one of Tottenham's better players on the day. However, it was a surprise to many that he started the match and stayed on for as long as he did before Dejan Kulusevski was introduced. In the next match, it would be more beneficial to start the Sweden international.
Dejan Kulusevski is one of the best in the business at picking up the ball in high-pressured situations and bringing it forward with pace. Coming up against Vitalii Mykolenko and Dwight McNeil for Everton, this could certainly be exploited.
Kulusevski will be fresh, after playing well in pre-season and only playing just shy of 20 minutes (with added time factored in) against Leicester. In my opinion, he is the most obvious way to strengthen the Tottenham lineup.
