1) Angel Gomes

The first one feels like a straightforward one. Spurs have been perennially linked with Gomes in recent months – with the 24 year old’s contract at Lille expiring at the end of the current season.

Born in Edmonton, Gomes moved to Manchester when he was six years old, and joined Manchester United soon after – a club he stayed at for over a decade, before moving to France to join Lille in 2020.

There is little doubt about the quality Gomes would provide in midfield. He has played as a defensive midfielder, box-to-box midfielder, and attacking midfielder in his career – and all to a good standard.

His best position is probably as a box-to-box. He would perfectly suit the current system, as the left sided number eight, picking the ball up between the lines and connecting midfield to attack. He is also extremely comfortable with his back to goal and at beating the press.

Even if Ange goes back to a 4231 set up, he would be capable of playing as the number ten, and particularly in the double pivot – next to a ball winning type of midfielder. Gomes made his England debut in September, and has seriously impressed in both of his starts against Finland so far, grabbing an assist for Jack Grealish in Helsinki.

Homegrown, versatile, at an age where he has experience but also his best years ahead of him, and with serious quality to go with all of that – Gomes is a signing that Spurs should be extremely serious about making, if they are to strive to continue improving.
