FC Barcelona fans will dislike revelation about potential Tottenham star signing
FC Barcelona fans will be far from pleased with the recent revelation regarding a potential signing of a Tottenham Hotspur superstar.
In a revelation that will leave FC Barcelona fans questioning their club’s scouting decisions, a former Barca scout has shared how the La Liga giants passed up the chance to sign Tottenham Hotspur's rising star, Micky van de Ven, for a bargain price.
Van de Ven, who has quickly established himself as one of the most promising centre-backs in the Premier League, could have been donning the famous Blaugrana shirt had things gone differently.
Micky van de Ven's journey to the top has been nothing short of impressive. When Tottenham signed him from Wolfsburg last year, the move went relatively unnoticed, and many Spurs supporters weren’t overly enthusiastic.
However, just over a year later, the Dutch defender has silenced any doubts, becoming a key figure in Ange Postecoglou’s backline and catching the eye of other top clubs.
FC Barcelona turned down opportunity to sign Tottenham superstar
Former Barcelona scout Bojan Krkic Sr. recently disclosed that he recommended Van de Ven to the Catalan club while the player was still an emerging talent.
Speaking to Carrusel Deportivo, Krkic revealed that Barcelona had the opportunity to sign the Dutch defender for as little as €3.5 million (around £3 million).
He described Van de Ven’s remarkable speed, even claiming that the centre-back was “faster than Mbappe,” and lamented that the deal was never finalised despite his insistence.
Krkic, who had two spells as a scout with Barcelona, didn’t specify the exact timeline of his recommendation, but it is believed that it occurred during his second tenure from 2017 to 2020.
At that time, Van de Ven was plying his trade at FC Volendam in the Dutch second division. It’s likely that the young defender's potential was overlooked due to his relatively low-profile status in a less competitive league.
Today, Van de Ven is widely regarded as one of the fastest and most talented defenders in Europe, making his impact felt in the Premier League. Who would have thought, Barcelona fans, right?
