Last two wins proof Conte is building something different at Tottenham
By Aaron Coe
Despite falling out of the Carabao Cup and producing a lackluster showing in the FA Cup, consecutive wins in the league show Tottenham is becoming different under Antonio Conte.
It is just two wins and just six points, however, the nature of the last two wins for Tottenham Hotspur shows something Spurs fans have not seen in some time. As Spurs have taken two straight in injury time, suddenly what felt like a couple of Spursy moments became true moments for Spurs fans as Tottenham is starting to be more.
Two straight extra-time wins for Tottenham
One of the things that made Manchester United back when they were feared was that United was never, ever out of a game. It could be the 97th minute when only three minutes of extra time were originally given and somehow the Red Devils would pull out a miracle.
We Tottenham fans have felt that once on a magical evening in Amsterdam but since that win, the will to win regardless of the cost seemed gone. Now, after two unlikely wins in a row, this team and we fans should be starting to believe there is something more at Tottenham Hotspur under coach Conte.
First, was the Watford match where Spurs created a ton of chances but struggled to finish. With 21 attempts to Watford’s six, Tottenham should have blown the Hornets away. Instead, the game looked like it would finish in a difficult-to-swallow 0-0 draw.
However, as Spurs continued to push and not quit on the game or themselves, Heung-min Son – in his last action in January – found Davinson Sanchez who scored an unlikely winner. Those three points were huge, particularly given Watford had beaten Spurs earlier this season. That win, however, unlikely helped to keep the Conte train moving.
Then after a difficult spell in the Carabao Cup and a tough-to-understand postponement of the north London derby, Spurs again looked to be thwarted in their attempts to move up the table. Tottenham took 27 shots to Leicester’s 14, yet through 93 minutes, it was 2-1 Leicester was winning, despite some Spurs players having good games.
Those last four minutes where Matt Doherty and Harry Kane both set up Steven Bergwijn for two rapid goals and an unbelievable victory now confirm, that belief that maybe, just maybe this team is becoming something more and can finish the project that Mauricio Pochettino started.
The celebrations among the players and the shared joy the team showed bodes well for the future. Now if Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy can step up and finish strong like the team a top-four finish can be within reach.
