Tottenham’s projected starting 11
Conte will be hoping for good news on the injury front, as he can ill-afford to have influential players missing for an extended stretch. Before knowing the updates on Romero and Hojberg’s injuries, which are expected later today, here’s how Conte will set his team up.
Assuming Romero and Hojberg aren’t fit enough to start, Conte will turn to Davinson Sanchez and Giovanni Lo Celso as their respective replacements. Harry Winks, after a promising fortnight of training, gets the nod, replacing the suspended Skipp. He’s the only other seasoned defensive central midfielder at the gaffer’s disposal and is desperate to prove his worth.
Lo Celso has enjoyed some success as a deep-lying midfielder under Jose Mourinho and is the best choice to partner Winks.
The gaffer, due to experience and athletic prowess, will turn to Davinson rather than selecting Joe Rodon or Japhet Tanganga. There’s not much to choose between Conte’s options, but Sanchez will be given at least one more chance to impress the new gaffer.
Son Heung-min recovered from a minor injury on duty with South Korea and retains his spot in support of Harry Kane, who should be beaming with confidence after bagging seven in two starts against Albania and San Marino.
Although Lucas Moura endured a difficult afternoon at Goodison, he gets the nod ahead of Steven Bergwijn, who enjoyed an excellent week with the Netherlands. Moura’s speed and directness will convince Conte to choose the Brazilian. Though one more subpar performance will see Moura lose his spot to either Tanguy Ndombele or Bergwijn.
