Tottenham projected defence

Defensively for Spurs, there really is only one big question as to the backline in this home affair with the Red Devils, which is who will start next to Cristian Romero.

Sergio Reguilon – Left fullback

An untimely illness for Ben Davis put Sergio Reguilon in a position to nail down the left fullback position and the Spaniard has not disappointed. His overly ambitious mistake against West Ham may prove really costly but it is more likely than not that Reguiilon helps earn more points for Spurs this season than he gives away. Reguilon’s ability to both stifle Mason Greenwood and Aaron Wan-Bissaka while simultaneously creating some forward push will be critical for a Tottenham victory.

Eric Dier – Left center-half

After a strong showing midweek at Burnley from Davinson Sanchez, it is possible the Colombian gets another shot next to Romero. However, more likely is that Santo sticks with Dier. Dier is the safer choice given his experience and Santo seems to lean that way. Sanchez would be helpful with the pace of Greenwood and Ronaldo to contend with, however, Dier still gets the nod from Nuno.

Cristian Romero – Right center-half

Technically just on loan – with an obligation to buy if my understanding is correct – Romero has been improving by the match for Tottenham as he better learns the league and his teammates. Sometimes a bit overly aggressive, Romero can be a world-class defender one day as he continues to grow his game. His match-up with Ronaldo and likely Rashford will be one to watch.

Emerson Royal – Right fullback

Emerson Royal came late in the window with a sizable price tag. After jumping right in and showing some good and bad, Royal is settling in like every week right back. Always willing to run forward, Royal is a consistent outlet for the team. Awkward-looking at times but almost always in position defensively, the Brazilian does play real defence.
