There is still a lot of the season left for Tottenham Hotspur, however, if Spurs are going to be a contender for any of their targets, Sunday afternoon needs to be moving day at St. James Park.

Tottenham started the weekend in eighth place in the table but could start the Newcastle match as low as 10th in the table, depending on what happens between West Ham and Everton in the lunchtime Sunday kickoff.

While Tottenham has dropped positions without playing, a win and the three points that come with it are vital right now in the campaign. The top three teams in the Premier League all won on Saturday.

Liverpool looked unstoppable, Chelsea did just enough, and Manchester City was dominant as normal. Keep within shouting distance of those three is important for Tottenham and three points keeps Spurs just four back of first, rather than seven.

As important as keeping up with the front-runners is, so too is gaining ground and advancing past the growing pack.

Tottenham can pick up points on a few table rivals

The top three teams in the league all took home three points, however, teams 4-6 coming into the weekend took only 1 point combined. Manchester United was overrun by Leicester City in the second half of their match, giving the Foxes seemingly dead season life. Brighton draw with bottom of the league Norwich, and Brentford played well but lost to league-leading Chelsea.

With all three teams struggling and Everton and West Ham facing each other, Sunday is a great opportunity for Tottenham to start rising above the growing midtable muck that it looks like a lot of teams are going to be fighting against.

With a lot of uncertainty surrounding the team at the moment, things are set up for a fall, which is where Spurs would go in the table with a loss.

With a win, Spurs could be as high as fifth and no lower than sixth, within three points of the top four. However, with a loss, Spurs will once again be in the bottom half and will have a load of teams to climb to get back toward the top. One way or another Sunday is going to be a moving day in the standings for Spurs, the question is which direction are they moving.
