Maintaining position in the table is going to be huge

Tottenham went into the match in 11th place five points back of Liverpool at the top. After beating a good Villa team that was ahead of them in the standings, Spurs climbed to eighth place, just four points back of first-place Chelsea.

Last season, West Ham United made a big jump and is now in Europa League with Leicester City. And while the Lions are struggling a bit to start this campaign, the Hammers look like a real top-half squad as do several other up-and-coming teams, including Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion.

These teams are in addition to the traditional powers like Manchester United and Liverpool. The battle for the European positions, particularly Champions League is going to be more competitive than ever. And while as we learned last season that you cannot win the league or a Champions League place before Christmas, you sure can lose it.

Had Tottenham lost all three points, as they did last year, they would have been seven points back of Chelsea, in 12th place. Even a draw would have left Spurs in 11th, behind Arsenal on alphabetization. Getting those points, sitting in the top half, and being within striking distance of the places the team covets is critical at this stage in the season.
